FV Report: Latest spy shots of the 2008 Mercury Montego

Caught just weeks before its expected debut at the 2007 Chicago auto show, this 2008 Mercury Montego prototype reveals a facelift of minor proportions. The grille is slightly different and the air dam is deeper, but we don't expect an average buyer would even notice the changes. Under the hood is where the real upgrades lie, as we expect the Montego will get the same 3.5-liter V6 as the 2008 Ford Five Hundred along with a six-speed automatic transmission.

looks the same to me the tail lights are a clue that somethins new but other than that and the much neded horsepower boost and trannie this is just a typical "refreshed" montego

Actually, it's a nicely done update. True, it won't set the world-afire, but certainly it is tastefully done and arguably is more nicely finished than the Ford Five Hundred's recent update from NAIAS.

Additionally, they did more than paste a few small touches to the current Montego. It's obvious (as savetheland said) that they took inspiration from the Milan -- and that's a good thing. The swept back lights look much better than the ugly headlamps they had before. Also the grille is much more cohesive and flows much nicer; compare it to the current one and you'll see what I mean. On the current Montego grille, along the top of the grille against the hood-line, the grille actually "bends upward" in the middle; while the lower grille is actually flat. This one is the opposite. The grille meets the hood at a flat line and then flows much more nicely. Take a look at the current one and the new one to see what I mean.

Also, the bumpers "stick out" along the corners is kinda like what the new BMW 3-Series does --- the grille and below are kind recessed into the front of the car.

Looking to the rear-end, the license plat frame has moved to the bumper and is flanked by new lights. The drunk seems to be completely devoid of extra distractions. And if you look along the bottome of the trunk, it almost looks like there is a chrome/satin strip like there is on the Milan as well. Plus with the tape covering the rear as much as it is, its hard to tell, but perhaps they've extended the rear light cluster onto the trunk like the Milan does as well. Could very well be.

So yeah, it's not a huge change, but certainly a few tasteful changes and touches have made the car look that much more appealing. It's not gonna win any awards, but it's not exactly a yawn as some have stated. If anything, the more "handsome" look to the Montego makes it a much nicer and upscale piece compared to the Five Hundred.

In the very beginning ford has stated that the montego and its ford five hundred siblings are about egronomics and comfort not Pizaz and performance. While the changes are nice its not groundbreaking but If i had a choice between this and the 500 I'd take this car over the 500 anyday
