CARNIVAL OF CARS: A Drive Around the Auto Blog Block for Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008

Happy New Year, friends, neighbors, vague acquaintances and complete strangers! We're barely into 2008 and already the effects are being seen in Detroit of that 40 percent hike in the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard.

As soon as I read of GM's decision to cancel the successor to the Northstar V-8, I thought of this asessment by the AUTOEXTREMIST, Peter DeLorenzo:

"Our politicians have now set into motion a radical re-structuring of this nation's fuel economy standards that will affect the cars and trucks we drive for the next 25 years. And in the course of doing so, I am quite certain that the powers that be remain blissfully unaware of the potential consequences that their actions will have on this nation's domestic automobile industry as a result."

Actually, Peter, I think the politicos and zealots know exactly what they are doing and can't wait to see the dire consequences of their actions. They hate capitalism and cars. Anita Lienert at Inside Line has more details on the GM decision.

On a cheerier note (unless you work for Nissan PR), The Truth About Cars' Michael Martineck took a spin in the new Rogue cute ute and came away mumbling about the CVT: "Opting for paddle shifters is like putting Peyton Manning in a pleated skirt and sweater; it’s not the right gear for the game." Redskins fans know why he wouldn't say that about Clinton Portis.

You say you woke up this morning wondering where Land Rover is headed in this era? Wonder no more. Top Speed's Simona Alina takes you to a YouTube link that has the answers you yearn to hear.

Well, I'm not sure but I have a hunch Joe Sherlock at The View Through the Windshield won't be putting down a deposit for a GT-R: "I don't care if it's super fast and super sporty. The Nissan GT-R is ugly. From its low-res 1989 Game Boy lines, odd chopped roof, strange black-drool grille, hideous drawn-by-a-second-grader spoiler-wing to its Chevy Cobalt taillights, it sucks." Come on, Joe, admit it, the thing just isn't fast enough, right?

Speaking of fast, Corvette Blog has a gallery of shots of the new ZR1. Don't forget to sprinkle the holy water before approaching the altar.

Ever saw a Ford Durango? Know what it is? Hemmings Auto Blogs knows.

Haven't seen the official photos of the 2010 Camaro? Left Lane News is your tip.

So what do you do when you find yourself in Minneapolis and there's already six inches on the ground during a nasty snowstorm?  Philly Murtha at JDPower.com blog explains the joys of renting an Explorer with all-wheel-drive.

If you are wondering how things are stacking up in the electric car world, The Garage Blog has lined up the answer.

Sure, it's a little late (published late November), but being a Kawasaki Concours owner, I just couldn't resist encouraging you to cast your eyeballs on this post by Dorrington Williams at Motor Musing about motorcycle cancer. For some reason, I just found it this morning. And no, I ain't sellin' the Connie!

See ya next week.
