The best designs deliver an emotional connection, according to Joel Piaskowski, Hyundai North America's Chief Designer. They're also polarizing, recognizable and are eventually imitated.
Hyundai's HCD10 Hellion, came from the (apparently) emotional designers at Hyundai's California Design Center in Southern California. Normally we laugh when designers take the stand at auto shows attempting to wow the motoring press with hundred dollar words that say nothing. But Piaskowski's presentation was genuinely passionate and, more importantly, the Hellion looks good. Pre-show illustrations of the Hellion had us convinced it was nothing more than a refreshed Isuzu Vehicross, but in person the Hellion's proportions are striking and attractive.
But we're still not sure hydration packs will ever replace cupholders.

That thing is pug-ugly. But it's funky enough that it just might have appeal.
The front end looks respectable (makes me wonder what the RAV-4 will look like in a few years). The rear end is awful. Are those taillights actually blocking rear visibility?
