Detroit Auto Show: Jaguar C-XF Concept – defining Jaguar’s design direction

The striking Jaguar C-XF concept car, which will make its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show, reveals Jaguar’s design direction for the next decade or more.  It offers a clue, not just to the appearance of the forthcoming S-type replacement – the XF – but also to the next generation of the XJ luxury sedan.

For the full Inside Line Feature, be sure and read our coverage of the Jaguar C-XF.

Here, there and everywhere in sunny, Southern California... Usually found going at Warp Factor 10.
BTW: layman's terms for ostentatious: Showy. Like I said, "in a VERY good way"...

That is pretty good looking. I agree that the grille almost resembles a buick, but I think the leaping kitty will immediately dismiss that initial thought.

Hopefully Jaguar can reestablish itself with this design, because right now, I don't think anyone knows what Jaguar's identity is.

I've said this on the other article, which has since been moved to file 13. I am a Jaguar driver [XJ]: and of 23 years of age. The images here are better, but they really don't change my opinion on the matter. I hate the grill. The car looks...obese and tired. It should look ...svelte and more cat-like.

As it is, it looks like some horrible Lexus. The styling really is unremarkable, and I don't think that the form of the body went far enough. It looks almost like any new Japanese car with a hood from an Aston Martin [put your finger over the grill]. Really, the design is pretty much boring. Not only does it not look like a Jag, Callum delt with this above, but it doesn't look like a luxury car. I will say the headlights look neat in their own way- when on,and I do like the leaper on the back of this car. Btu ultimatly, this car is highly disappointing. I am not saying this to be mean, I can't tell you how much I wish this car wasn't.

I admit that I really don't car about the XF thing, I am however highly interested in the redesign of the XJ, which I have read very promising things about, but most people really lack any form of taste. Seeing this concept troubles me.

One more thing: about the fact that there is no visible stitching, I really don't believe for a single second that it makes the car look as if the interior is wrapped in leather: It makes it look cheap is what it does. people are rarely able to distinguish between a leather and modern plastic ones. True stitching is the inevitable hallmark of leather, otherwise you loose the feel of quality and materials integrity as a first impression.

I have to disagree with cdoke. I'm pretty disappointed by the styling as I thought the teaser picture looked much cooler with the light orientation. However, I think it looks much more like an Audi than a Lexus. Jaguar needs to distinguish itself with styling because that's their best asset. This is a little better than what most European manufacturers make, but not by much.

Is it just me? or does this look A LOT like a Fisker? The car simply doesn't look like a Jaguar, and from the side, looks a lot like a Lincoln MKS. The car may look cool, but it doesn't look like a Jaguar.

I think the car is beautiful....but not a Jaguar. If Jaguar intends to leave its storied past behind, then this is the way to go (though it'll eat a lot of Aston sales in the process). Jag has always been an "historic" marque, and the modernization that it has undergone the past few years leaves me flustered. When VW modernized the Beetle, it was still distinctly a Beetle. Next, will the XJ look like a Merc or a Lexus?

I want one only if it is not tamed and ruined in production form.....this is the jag that can move the brand's image in a positive direction. By the way, have you guys seen all the other models lately???...they need this bad. I had a previous generation XK8 and swore I would never go back to Jag, now I am actually changing my mind.

I really have to comment the complete lack of originality in this design. It looks like an american muscle car, particularly in the front. I cannot understand how this car can relate to the Jaguar history.

Totally nonsense if you ask me.

I beg to differ with the lot of you. Ian's got an amazing talent, and this car is gorgeous. Especially from the front views, the car looks poised, powerful, and most definitely reminds me of a predator. It may not be slender and lithe, but strikes me very much a large cat ready to pounce; a lot of weight, but agile. The front is strong and sorted, the back a little fussy, but still better than the Bangle Butts on the 6-Series. If they build it on a good chassis like the new XK, this could be the car that saves Jaguar.

I must say that this car offers a vision for the future that I for one am excited to behold. I love all the old time Jaguar loyalists huffing and puffing about this car, but where have you been the last 5 years? Certainly not in the showroom. This car is bold and beautiful and is perhaps the most stunning design to come out of Europe in some time. Kudos to you Ian Callum. Your designs are beginning to take flight. You were obviously hamstrung by 'tradition' on the new XJ...and look where that got Jaguar. A technically superior automoblie wrapped in an old person's body and as a result, stillborn. You retained a few old (call it traditional) tidbits in the stunning new XK, but one could immediately see it was virtually all you. Now...and finally, a car that is all you, with no external influences by the old Jaguar guard. A completely fresh and groundbreaking design. and perhaps the single best design for a new midsize sedan I have ever seen in my life.

Thank you for that!!!

I'm fairly confident the original owners of Swallow Sidecars were just as miffed when Jaguar moved away from motorcycle sidecars and began building automobiles. "What are they thinking"? I'm sure the 'loyalists' chimed to themselves.

The negatives posted must be coming from Mercedes and BMW owners who now feel justifiably threatened.

Dust off my check book gladys, here I come.

This masterpiece is a logical progression for Ian Callum, not Jaguar.

Seems like if Jag went with this awesome design then it wouldnt be a Jaguar. Jaguar use to have that rare mysterious presence thats virtually absent today. I think they should keep the timeless designs of the past like BMW and Mercedes were able to do while keeping it fresh and modern.

As one of the few members of the public to have already seen this car in the metal, and a long term Jaguar enthusiast, having owned XJ's and an X-Type, wait until you've seen the car in the flesh so to speak, it is stunning. I'm a Jag traditionalist I love the XJ, but to survive Jaguar have to move on. The clues are all there though, the grill is a modern incarnation of the original 60's XJ, the stance is pure Jaguar the curve of the side windows, taken as a whole if the production version is as close to this as the XK was to the ALC concept this will be a winner.

chrispinkney - Jan 3, 2007 6:02 am (#18 Total: 21)

Every one is forgetting that the original S-Type and XJ were designed only a few years apart, Jaguars have not always looked the same and don't need to be an evolution of the previous model. Look how BMW and Mercedes are struggling to modernise their designs yet keep the cars looking like they always have, not until the cls did anyone say wow about a Merc saloon and that car will start to look old very quickly, avant garde design always does. BMW's are extreemly staid awkward designs but percieved status and marketing means everyone wants them. If the XF concept had a BMW badge on the bonnet, no other changes, I guarantee the comments would be more positive. I reiterate, wait until you've seen it for real.

As a Jaguar owner over the years with an E type and two X types I think this is a good move for Jaguar. Of current vehicles it reminds me of the Maserati quattroporte. It seems that the grille comes almost straight from the XJ6 series 1 so it still builds on the past with a current look maybe with melding Aston Martin flair. Hints at this styling have come before from Ian Callum interviews. I would not be surprised to see a new X type based on the RD concept next (if they can afford to continue that line at all).

I hate it. It looks like every other ugly car on the road. They forget what they were popular for in the first place. That is why they are not selling much & closing plants.
They ruined the XJ8, I bought the sedans up until they changed them.
Now I would like to buy a sports car but they are awful too. If they would just bring back the e-type for today's market they would do a lot better. The back & side of the XKR looks like an old camaro or something awful. I was hoping for some improvement but none here either, they probably will go broke with this crap.

to everyone who blasts this car as a departure from the history of the brand, look at the recent history of their SALES. Ford is trying to unload them over and over. Last year Kia balked at the idea of making a purchase. Their sales have been in the dumps for years. They needed a face lift and this is the perfect way to do so. If you true car buffs remember correctly, years ago Cadillac was faced with a bit of a problem. Their customers were dying. Nobody was interested in a Caddy anymore. The silver hair set had died out. Well Jaguar often finds itself in the same position. Who drives an XJ? S Type? What's the profit margin on an Xtype? Thing of these things when you rip apart a great company trying to compete with the other big luxury sedan brands. You will all eat your words when Arpil of 08 rolls around and this bad ass ride hits the showroom. Forget history. History belongs in books not on the street. And last time I checked, history didn't drive sales. Innovation did. And this will reinvent the Jaguar brand.
