Spy photos: Next generation BMW X3 test mule caught

These are the first pictures of what will eventually become the 2010 BMW X3. Yes, it's a long way off, but the current X3 just received its midcycle refresh for 2007, so don't expect the fully redesigned model for at least another few years. Clearly, it will continue to ride on the same platform as the current 3 Series which should mean shared engine and drive systems as well. Obviously, the 3 Series wagon sheetmetal doesn't reveal much about the styling of the next X3, but there are a few differences between this mule and the current X3...

From the rear, this test mule appears to have a redesigned suspension setup compared to the current X3. That lower control arm looks pretty close to a wishbone in shape, but without a better angle it's hard to tell for sure. The cross brace is new too, but appears temporary. Same goes for the support arm bolted to the protruding mount on the side. The rear view also shows how much wider the next X3 is compared to the 3 Series, hence the big fender flares necessary to contain the relatively tame tires.

I wonder if there may be a large tire option, thus requiring the large fender flares?
Hmm I kind of like the looks of that car (with the wagon body). Maybe BMW should consider doing a butch wagon along the lines of the Audi Allroad or Subaru Outback?
It's an E91 3 Series Wagon on steroids! Good post, Ed!
Where's the list? Sign me up!
I got a laugh out of the 330xi badging...
Hope they stick with the manual gearbox as an option.
I'm not an SUV guy, but that looks pretty good. It's got distinct character.
i like this alot. id rather buy that, than an X3. but at the same time it looks like a mini Mercedes R500... but nicer.
This looks so much better than the current X3! I WANT one ! THis is what BMW should put on the market
Stop that test mule! I want it so bad. The X3 out now is so "bleh", but this one makes me drewl.
Why wait everyone? :o)
Just get one of these: http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/3/328xisportswagon/default
3er allroad! not bad
The BMW Outback. In a strange way I kinda like it! LOL
that looks awesome!
Based on the sheer size, how is this not the new BMW X6? It looks the same size as a Merc R-Class, same idea... maybe a third row seat?
Looks odd at first, but still way better than the X3, which to me is the ugliest SUV out there, mainly due to its irregulary shaped headlights. Hopefully the new X3 will look like this.
Looks a lot nicer than the current model. I hope it's available when my wife's FX lease is up in 2009
mattvenick,
Despite earlier reports of it being an R Class-like vehicle, the X6 is actually more of an Infiniti FX-type vehicle (looking something like a BMW X5 and Dodge Caliber cross) with a tight 2nd-row seat and no room for a 3rd-row.

X3? If only BMW NA would buck the dealers and certify the E91 335/335d -- maybe require special orders with big non-refundable deposits to allay dealer fears.
