2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Mazda Taiki concept

Mazda will be displaying this wild looking Taiki concept at the Tokyo Auto Show later this month. Under the skin is reportedly the next-generation rotary engine. The new RENESIS rotary engine dubbed the 16X, a twin rotor unit sending
drive to the rear wheels. It that features a longer stroke and a larger
displacement 1.6L (800cc x 2) design...
The new design is said to raise
the thermal efficiency and torque levels at all engine speeds and, with
a new direct injection system and lightweight aluminum side housing,
will also reduce fuel consumption.
Most people, however, will be talking about the exterior styling. Mazda says it's a continuation of organic design themes explored in earlier concept such as the Nagare, Ryuga and Hakaze concept vehicles.

Um, those rear wheel fairings? I really don't get it.
Can somebody explain what stroke is on a rotary engine? I'm guessing the maximum distance between the rotor and block wall?
As far as styling, it reminds me of the Aptera.
I like the current styling so I say "bleh" to the design.
However, the engine seems like it addresses the 2 primary complaints of the current rotary - a lack of torque and fuel (and oil) consumption.
I think we are looking at some cues for the new RX-7 or RX-8. I read that they were increasing the engine size and the information above validates this.
Okay, this organic design language is interesting. But, apparently they don't know how to speak it yet. Right now, it's looking like the space inspired car designs of the late 50's and 60's. And look how highly regarded those are now.
