NHTSA looking into Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice brakes

NHTSA have launched a probe into Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice brakes, as there have been 40 complaints, one involving a crash. It should be noted the vehicles in question are the turbocharged Solstice GXP and Sky Red Line. There have been no complaints on non-turbo models from either brand.

This is not good news, especially since Consumer Reports has just recently given the Solstice and Sky only a so-so rating. It's a real shame as these vehicles offered so much promise.

I'm looking for a newer roadster to replace my Miata, and my problem is every top I see on one of those has poor fit. You see all kinds of wrinkles, creases, and wonder about quality control.

I think I'll get another Miata.

I just can't get too excited about recalls anymore. All the manufacturers seem to have them, and I'm not sure they really indicate an overall quality issue.

Name a car, and the NHTSA likely has opened an investigation into some safety issue with it within the last five years.

steve: recalls are not supposed to be quality issue indicators! they're supposed to be recalls for specific problems... simple as that...

Stories like this keep reminding me of the Pontiac Fiero. A great looking car (in it's day) that sold really well in the 1st year or two. Then reliablity problems and not living up to it's sports car looks doomed it to a short lifespan.

It's a nice looking car but it just doesn't have the whole package right the way the Mazda Miata does. I've give it a couple more years before it's dropped.

Hey-
Pontiac's doing a major turn around with the G8 and future G7. If the next gen. Solstice (and I'm pretty sure it'll happen) is what the new G8 is to the current Pontiac Grand Prix, then Pontiac will have a winner, Mazda a real opponent.
