Full Test: 2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman

It's the big Mini.

The Mini Cooper S Clubman is almost 10 inches longer than the mini Mini. It gives the little darling a usable backseat without sacrificing fun and precision through corners.

Do you like it better than the regular Cooper S?

When I was a kid, I had a neighbour with one of the original Mini clubmans. (we just called it a min van long before that term was used by Dodge).

I thought it was serious cool then and it still is.

Of course I always had a real fondness for anything out of the norm.
(Boring really should be one of the 7 seven deadly sins)

The worst thing a car can be is boring. With those crazy doors 'round back, the Clubman even trumps the already quirky Cooper Hardtop in the anti-Camry category. Better still, it has back seats that are more than just a shelf, and a boot that can hold more than just a briefcase. My test drive is scheduled for Saturday.

I'm not a big fan of cars like the Mini Cooper, or VW Beetle to start off with. But I was thinking it wasnt too bad until I saw the $33K price, which made me laugh. For that money you could get a Pontiac G8, or a used M3 like Edmunds has. Both would dust the Mini and the Pontiac could easily seat four in comfort with room for luggage.

For $20k this is an interesting small car.

At $33k it is cartoonishly funny. They can't be serious.

Yeah, $33k is a little much. The base sticker for a Clubman S manual is more like $24k. Add a couple options, and you're only looking at about $26k-$27k. As always, Edmunds was provided a test car that was totally decked out.

Yes $33K is expensive, but that is for a fully loaded car. Yes you could get a G8, but what if you don't want a G8? I really doubt that any MINI buyers would ever consider that car.
One is small, gets great gas mileage and handy around town. The other is large and a gas hog. But if you want a large fast gas hog, then go ahead.
There are hundreds of different vehicles that you could get for $33k. But all the matters is the vehicle that you want.

I like it. More space, same fun. However I don't know how well it's gonna sell
