Jeep Commander to be retired

Long rumored, it's now been confirmed by insiders that the Jeep Commander is indeed going the way of the dodo bird. Jeep has yet to make the announcement, thus making it "truly official," but I would expect that to come shortly. It should be dead and buried by mid 2009.

Frankly, I'm sorry to see it go. Even though it had a third row seat that's about as comfortable as a Gitmo Prison cell, I still preferred it over the Grand Cherokee. Why? Styling. It just looks like what a Jeep should look like; not so for the Grand Cherokee. Oh well, at least there's the new Liberty, which still looks like a Jeep.

So Commander, R.I.P., it's a shame we will never see you evolve...

This has been the best looking Jeep in a long time, I think if they revamped the interior a bit maybe it would have gone further. Maybe its all the crossovers that killed the commander?

How sad!!!

Now if we can just get rid of the Compass...

Ditto, estreka.

The Commander was ill-conceived from the get-go. Why would they release a monster SUV during a gas crunch and expect to sell the volumes upon volumes that they produced?!? Chrysler needs to get their inventory problems solved.

I say good riddance.

They bet the farm on the Hemi, and didn't look at other aspects of the vehicle. It was never really very competitive.

It competed against their own Grand Cherokee/Durango which doesn't make much sense. There still is a smaller market for a full size SUV for larger families who want to go off road and don't care for crossovers or minivans. Why not improve it, maybe offer a hybrid version, make it a true full size, and just make it in smaller numbers? It came into the market too late in usual Chrysler fashion but why get rid of it so soon?

What a shame. I liked the Commander a lot, it was the true pinnacle of Jeep styling. What killed it was not being much bigger than the Grand Cherokee to justify the additional cost. I dont think gas prices can be blamed because you still see Tahoes, Expeditions, etc.

Bob and I can't seem to agree on anything lately. But come on! If I asked 100 people which was the better looker between the Grand and the Commander, at least 95 would say the Grand. It just looks so much better. And being lighter and samller, it handles better on the trail than a Commander. That's what a Jeep should be. And Jeeps weren't made to seat 7 (if you've been in the Commander, you'd know it doesn't either!

Re-read my post and see what I said about the 3rd row seat.

As to the looks, we'll just have to agree to disagree. I've never liked the current GC's styling—nor do I like the swoopy styling found on many SUVs these days. For these vehicles, I want 'em boxy. That's why I like the Pilot and I like the Commander (and the old Trooper too).

Finally, the GC and Commander share the exact same chassis, and same wheelbase which is 109.5 inches. The Commander is a scant 1/2 inch longer than the GC. It's just as trail-ready as the GC.

Don't believe me? Check for yourself.

Tell you the truth, I don't like any of the new Jeeps except the Grand Cherokee. When they stopped making the Cherokee the really made a mistake then it was all downhill from there. Shame. I think they reailze they made a mistake and are trying to make up for it with the Partiot. Tell you the truth... what's up with all the 'patriotic' names they call the cars? What was wrong with Cherokee? Now it's like they are trying to push Nationalism and Patriotism which is a HUGE turn off to me and completely aside from the point, the car itself and everyone liking it. Cherokee was about the first SUV made. Personally, they should've just kept making it better and better, like Ford did the Mustang. It's still being made, I do believe, they just keep revamping it and making it better and better. I wonder why this happened with the Cherokee to begin with then the decline of the entire line of Jeep styling which I think they got very ugly up till the new Grand Cherokee after they killed the Cherokee. Someone had and has VERY poor taste in looks. Sad to see the Jeep line, in general, suffer because of someones terrible taste and thoughts on how the Jeep line should be run in the corporate world. It's a turnoff..... I'll keep my Cherokee till they make a decent looking and running Jeep like the Cherokee. It's styling and lines will live forever. They messed up. By the way, I think the Commander is ugly and over done. Another thing, why is Jeep trying to make their Jeeps look like Hummers? What was wrong with Jeeps? Again, back to corporate issues... someone is messing up the entire line of Jeeps if you ask me.... A Hummer is a Hummer and a Jeep is a Jeep. We don't copy! Lets have dignity and self respect and loyalty to our OWN line of cars. Just my opinons.

If the Commander was the "pinnacle of Jeep styling", what's that make my old '86 Cherokee Chief, better looking and better proportioned that this modern-day knockoff? Good riddance.
