This list is absurd. It's basically a list of who makes the most power from a given displacement by turbocharging it. I could ask a fifth grader to use the wikipedia and make me a list of turbo engines and it would be the same thing.

While I'm not in love with Ward's 10 best, at least they have more criteria than hp vs displacement. The Nissan VQ, Caddilac DI and Honda with VCM lose to the M3 engine! Give me a break.

This is silly. And the cutoff points are so arbitrary.

And why no rotary engine segment? Mazda would dominate that entry. ;-)

What?! No mention of the Subaru boxer in the news article itself? Somebody's got some 'splain' to do! j/k

Proves again the superiority of German engineering. Way to go BMW/Audi/Porsche.

re. the poster who said this list just rewards turbo motors, the BMW V8s in the M3 and M5 are not turbos.

bepperb - May 8, 2008 1:28 pm (#7 Total: 14)

Yes, the Germans certainly proved their superiority with their purchase of Chrysler. Turned that right around. And a quick glance at consumer reports will again validate their amazing engineering. In fact, I don't think the long term M3 has seen the shop yet. It's a shame us Americans can't figure out Idrive, they must all be geniuses over there. Probably why they landed on the moon first.

To the poster who doesn't think this list is biased towards turbocharged engines, 8 of 12 on the list have a turbo, whereas less than 10% of vehicles sold have forced induction (worldwide, less in the us).

Yeah, not so sure that this is a very useful list. I'm sticking with Ward's.

GM's 2.0L makes 260 hp. That's some serious specific output, which seems to be the criteria for this list. I'm surprised it didn't make it.

Does anyone else find it funny that the Toyota 1 Liter engine won the "Under" 1 liter category. So apparently they're following the example of consumer reports.

I just can't get my head around the fact that the Nissan VQ didn't beat the M3 engine. It's faster around the German nurburgring, with more power, and is sometimes turbocharged (which these judges LOVE) a much more versitile engine being installed in everything from family sedans to suv's to the GT-R. Plus, for every one M3, nissan will make 200 of these. If specific output, fuel efficiency, value, production volume or reliability are criteria in the least, this engine would win. And what other criteria would one judge an engine by?

Country of origin???? This list is FOS.

It probably is technically under 1 liter. Most engines are slightly under their claimed displacement. Example would be a 1998cc "2.0".

I'm curious about the the 2.5 litre turbo boxer from Subaru making the list. Is that the WRX engine they tested (certainly not the base impreza)? They listed good fuel economy as a feature of this engine, but I always considered Subarus to be kinda lousy in that department. Is that engine really that efficient?

In 35,000 miles of driving my 2.5L WRX I have yet to record gas mileage under 21 mpg. I just recently took a 220 mile trip at speeds... well let's just say well over the limit, and averaged 25.9 mpg. Not too shabby for a "performance" engine.

BTW, I check my gas mileage every time I fill up.

Lastly, this engine also won this award in 2006.

Yeah seriously. My NA SR20DE with 145 hp sports a record worst tank of 21 mpg I believe, also at extra-legal speeds. What's your record best Bob? Mine is 33.
