Seoul Auto Show: Daewoo G2X

Look familiar? It should as it's merely the Saturn Sky Red Line/Opel Speedster, but now for the Korean market. The car is being introduced at the Seoul Auto Show. There's no question that GM is getting their money's worth out of the this Kappa platform.

I hope Saturn isn't available in Korea.

Ouch. Glad I'm not a Sky owner now, although it doesn't really matter anyways.

Why? That thing looks great.

GM gets a lot from Daewoo (Aveo and several Suzukis) so why not give back a little?

And to think, over on Karl's blog he muses about Mercedes feeling like a Chrysler badge job--even one on an old platform-- would weaken the brand.

United States of America, loud'n'proud!
Funny comments from the peanut gallery concerning selling a car under different brands around the world. Folks just don't seem to get the fact that if the first brand *isn't* sold somewhere, using another of the parent company's brand that *IS* sold in that new area isn't a bad thing to do. Especially if it allows greater return on investment for the platform in question (definitely the case for the Kappa cars).

I think it's a smart idea. Hopefully they're not resurrecting some famed, out of commission nameplate and badging the Sky under its name... I'm thinking the whole Monero/GTO fiasco here. But there's no way that's probable.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with sharing platforms globally. It's the smart way to do business. Look at the problems Ford, GM, and Chrysler are/were facing with their global platforms. GM has kind of gotten into the groove of consolidating global models, but Ford and Chrysler are horrible. IMO, this is partially why they're losing so much money. More platforms = more design/building/production costs = less profit. They need to consolidate.

Some of the same people who think this is a bad idea are probably the same people who want Ford to bring over the Mondeo and the Falcon, and GM to bring over the Commodore and Astra. Sorry for any stereotypes.
