Remember Merkur?

I was just thumbing through the "Manufacturer" categories (you'll find them in the right-hand margin of this page) and came across "Merkur" which unleashed a ton of memories.

Do you remember Merkur? It was a Ford import arm that brought over European Fords from Europe in the 1980s.

I remember the Merkur XR4Ti -- a cool-looking hatchback with a dramatic rear wing -- as being a bit problematic, but there is a dedicated enthusiast following on the Web, including the International Merkur Owners Network.

Then there's the Merkur Scorpio, a super-capable 5-door hatch that never really got the traction it deserved in the States. Was a capable driver's car? Well, I know that the lead instructor at the Ford/Michelin Ice Driving School in Steamboat Springs, a former French rally champ, adored his Scorpio -- maybe it was the only one in Colorado.

And I just looked at used Scorpios online, very affordable, and they still look cool.

Yes, I remember it. A friend of mine had one. "Merkur" is German for "Mercury."

Merkurs look like aliens trying to fit in as humans. You can tell they are trying but there is still something not quite right.

When I was in high school, my dad's boss owned one. We house sat for him and were asked to warm up the car once in a while, drive it around.

Pretty nice, but I believe the turbo wasn't intercooled, and the car was very, um, "quirky".

(A Subaru owner calling another car quirky, imagine that?)

Before you remember Merkurs too fondly, remember they had the endearing quality of both being a Ford and being built in Germany, which for a 1980's car was not a winning combination. I remember my UK friend who had one remarking that the typical trip was an experience to see what new bits would fall off.

I worked for Lincoln Mercury Division at the time and we introduced both the XR4ti and the Scorpio. I can remember the dealer ride and drive for the XR4ti at the Pocono Speedway. We had Bondurant drivers take us around the course and it was a blast but it's always a little scary when someone else was driving. Later, I leased a Scorpio for my wife. She said it was the best car she had ever driven...that is when we didn't have a quality problem. The most fun one was when you would unlock the car, the locks would cycle on an off, so you had to open the door during the unlock cycle. It was fun to drive though.

there are 2 Scorpio's still running in my neighborhood. Both wine colored. I haven't seen an XR4ti in years. I'm sure the turbo 2.3's out of the T-bird have long ago died a horrible death.

I first saw the "Merkur" in Europe during the early 80's. Though it was called "Sierra" over there. (GM/Cutlass Ciera, kept that name from North America) I fell in love. the cosworth ralley version was sweet. My pop bought one of each "Merkurs" and still talks about them. And I still want an XR4Ti, with the bi-plane. sigh

My first car was a silver over gray 1988 XR4TI 5-spd. LMAO, I had the coolest car for a junior in highschool back in '94. Yes, the car had it's problems, but never have I had so much fun. Knowing what I know now, if I could find another silver '88 just like I had in highschool, I'd totally own another one.

We now have 4 Merkurs - one XR4TI, original from 86, and three Scorpios, two 88s and one 89. I've had Mercedes owners tell me they wished they had not traded in their Scorpio. Driven the white one cross country three times to the Ford show in Carlisle. Had 60 Merkurs in a convoy on the PA Turnpike and hundreds on the show grounds. Still very active clubs and internet lists, so if you want one, no excuses!

Hey Rich,

Does he still have the Scorpio? I own a yahoo group for Colorado Merkur Owners, and am finding more people everyday. Fourmerkurs where are you located? I'm here in Firestone CO, and won a best in show stock 88 Scorpio trophy from the MCA in 2004. I also convoyed last year and we had 75 Merkurs on th PA turnpike as we headed into Carlisle :<)
