GMC to offer V8 option for midsize Canyon pickup

The sharp-eyed detectives over at PickupTruck.com have discovered that GMC (and Chevy too, I'm sure) will be offering a V8 option on their midsized Canyon in early 2008. It's likely to be the same small block V8 found in the recently announced Hummer H3 Alpha. So the big question is will it be badged a 2008 or 2009 model?

The H3 got it so it was just a matter of time!

I think this has been a hindrance for the small truck market. I'm glad to see V8s come out.

I really don't see a V8 as a necessity in this segment as the best trucks (Tacoma-Frontier) in the mid size segment all use big powerful V6's and they get the job done without sweating. Maybe GM should better the package as a whole instead of just "throwing a V8 in it." That mentality just doesn't work anymore.

sounds like a good idea to me and offer it in a SS package

I agree GM could improve the package but I see nothing wrong with "throwing a V8 in it". GM's V8 are some of the best engines in the world, IMHO better then any high tech multivalve, multicam V6.

Remember these are trucks and even "small" trucks are not small any more (over 2 tonnes for 4wd extracab). GM could stick in one of it's modern V6's but a V8 will work better, sound better and likely match (or beat) a high reving V6 in real world mileage. And it will do it on regular gas too.

And don't forget, there's a lot of people out there that would like a smaller truck, but they need the towing capabilities of a 1/2 ton. This is a great way to improve truck fuel efficiency as a company.

I'd like to say it's about time, although it was probably less expensive to modify the frame to accept the V8 than it was to design a V6 that would be up to truck duties like the old venerable 4.3 V6 is.....

I'd love to get a regular cab, sport suspension 2wd version.... Then do some computer programing to bump the HP to over 300 horses and you've got a bonafide SS truck.

I looked up the curb weight of such a truck and it's only 3402lbs. Add in maybe 150 to 200 more lbs for the V8 and some heavy duty parts and you'd still have a light weight muscle truck at a bargain price.

Very cool.

This V8 wont really help the Colorado/Canyon that much I think. Their chassis and interior are really outddated and crummy, and they dont look that great either. They need to be completely overhauled to begin with. The Tacoma and Fronteir are so much better, I was walking by a blue Tacoma with the long bed yesterday, and it looked so cool I was wishing I had one.

My thoughts exactly Daytona. To me sticking a V8 in a mediocre product just makes it a faster mediocre product!
