Is Maybach on the way out?

Word is out that Maybach is cutting 29 US dealers from their total of 71. There have been rumors for some time that Mercedes-Benz would be doing something drastic with the Maybach brand, as sales are nowhere near where they had hoped they would be. Many feel that the Maybach is nothing more than an über-Mercedes, but with an über-über price tag.

So is this the beginning of the end for Maybach? Will Mercedes eventually pull the plug on this brand?

I was never crazy about the idea from the get-go.

It might help sales if the Maybach looked sexy and sleek, insted of fat and drab.

I've always felt that the Maybach 57 and 62 just looked like bigger and heavier S-Classes. With the styling of the new S Class this has never been more true. The RR Phantom, now thats a completely different deal and the car which I would buy....if only I had that kind of money. :(

I just saw a couple of 57s when I was out in Bev Hills a couple of nights ago. Their problem was that there was an S55 Benz parked near them, which looked soooo much better. For, what, 1/3 of the cost?
Maybachs look like some kind of weird Merc limo designed in Korea.

Yes I add my vote to "styling killed Maybach".

Sounds like Maybach needs more value in their product.

If you can afford a car like this you should be buying a GT3, Carrera GT, Z8, Vyron...A House!-instead. Who needs such an expensive recliner??

Not all the ultra-rich want sports cars.

desmolicious - Oct 5, 2007 1:17 pm (#9 Total: 12)

And the ultra rich have all that stuff already...this is just one car in their fleet.

it's like the VW phaeton,
People as a whole expect something from a brand not more nor less
as it's part of a scale, ( platform sharing doesn't make it in luxury.
so when you buy a Maybach you don't want to have you entourage saying it's a Benz it's a MAYBACH YOU IDIOT!!
they simply need to have their car show a totally different car from a Benz.
the kind if design that would be so upscale that slapping s class on to it would devaluate the car . ( my suggestion start with the regected designs of previous s-class ( the 1980 ish ones and evolve it in a different way ( like what the s-class would be now if we went THAT way and add the usual pampering with sheep skin taken only from the Serta sheeps and a smart cruise control likned to the gps for the Chauffeur edition :P so you have somebody to share cheers with

oh and that Evolution if the design went THAT way ...

Patent pending......

Alright, if you need a recliner in your fleet, then make it a Rolls Royce, plain and simple. So much more beautiful if we're talking design.
