BMW's smart idea: Bring back the Isetta

In an effort to meet the Mercedes-built Smart head-on, BMW is reportedly planning on resurrecting their tiny Isetta microcar. AutoExpress states that we should see something by around 2010.

If you think this is a silly idea, consider their success in bringing back the Mini Cooper, and in resuscitating Rolls-Royce.

Full story here and here.

And cue the story about BMW no longer owning the rights to the Isetta name...

God how awful would that be? Oh wait, that's kind of already happened...

Smart never made a profit. In fact they've bled red ink for years.

I think this is a BIG "if". If the Smart is a hit in the USA, BMW might follow.

But I doubt either of those things will happen.

Is it a 3-wheeler?

I found another article referencing the Isetta concept and it's got a very BMW-esque design, but it doesn't look the same. Anyone read French?

I'm hopeing BMW will bring here soon. These cars make the perfect second car to the family minvan, SUV, crossover, wagon, whatever.

They take up very little space in your driveway/ garage, use very little fuel, don't cost much, easy to park, cool to be seen in (if that matters to use).

Basically they are a wonderful escape from the blandness of most entry level cars. I agree they won't fill all you needs for most people but then most people have more then one car.

I love our Grand Cherokee but we put twice as many miles on our Subaru.

If it has a back seat (and a 4th wheel), I would buy one.

Later Isettas had four wheels. I love this concept, actually, and it should be a strong contender in Europe if no place else.

If the Smart is any indication, it would be a big seller in Canada.

I have a hunch (given the chance and the right price), it would be a big hit in the states too.
