2008 Detroit Auto Show Preview: Hummer HX concept embargo broken

In the latest embargo-gate, images of the the Hummer HX concept have made their way to the Net thanks to Hummerguy.net (here) and other sites. This is just another example of how futile and silly these imposed news embargos are; they just don't work.

At any rate, Hummer will be showing this  HX concept at Detroit, which is surely a clear indication of what their upcoming H4 Wrangler-fighter will look like. As with virtually every new concept these day, it's an eco-friendly vehicle in that it's powered by a flex-fuel 3.6 SIDI V6 that can run on E85 or regular gas. In addition it's a body-on-frame construction with a 103" wheelbase, and has full-time 4WD as well as a fully independent suspension.

...And like the Wrangler, the HX also has removable doors.

Full story here.

The chopped look is getting old. Let some sunlight in, folks.

You can barely see out of that thing.

The side view mirrors are mounted on the doors - how does it stay street legal once the doors are removed?

'Concepts' are not street legal. :)

Hummer does not need 4 models.

I actually think Hummer needs this. They actually only have 2 models. The H2 and the H3. The H1 is no longer sold to civilians. At least that I know of. I think the military can still get them. They need more in thier lineup and they for sure ain't gonna do a car. They need a cheap off road contender to the Wrangler. The H3 isn't even close to being like that. It's more like a 4-Runner or X-Terra.

The thing that makes the Wrangler so great - it's cheap, has great off road capability and has tremendous visibility...

If this thing is produced anywhere close to what I see, I only see worse visibilty than the FJ and you'd better get the soft top otherwise risk a bruised noggin everytime you hit a bump. Oh and a price north of 30K. But it's a concept so I guess I shouldn't harp too much. At least it looks cool. Not very functional, but when it looks cool, who cares about function?

Make it cost less than 25K with decent options (fully loaded can creep towards 30K), open it up so the visibilty is good and build it with the current GM interior/build quality and you've got a bonafide Wrangler contender. Maybe that will wake Chrysler up and make them do something about their awful interiors and build quality.

I agree. This is the only Hummer that grabs my interest. Besides, the Wrangler needs some competition.

Interesting looking but it looks a bit thirsty.

My question is, will it compete on price with the Wrangler?

I expect it to priced at about double that of a base Wrangler.

It also will likely only have an automatic and will be marketed to the image crowd rather then the off road crowd (meaning it will be viewed as a poser).

My predition anyhow.

I like it. I want to echo Bob, this is the only Hummer that grabs my interest. Being a concept, I'm positive the production model would have a higher roof and mirrors attached somewhere other than the doors. They did a good job really grabbing the best bits of Hummer styling (better than the featureless brick that is the H2) and this is simply moving the brand in the right direction.

This model makes sense, but Hummer needs an economical diesel engine a lot more than a new model. If Hummer puts a diesel in the H3 or if Jeep puts a diesel in the Wrangler, one of those will be my next vehicle.

One of the most important items for off roading is outward visibility. You need to see where you're going! For this to compete, it needs the glasshouse area enlarged, it needs the hood to be lower and that junk on it removed. It needs the hatcback slope area behind the driver raised.
Otherwise it will be just another poseur like the Toy FJ.

All it needs is a 3.0 liter, 4 cylinder diesel that gets at least 25mpg, and a manual transmission. This is sweeeeet!
