Chicago Auto Show Preview: Suzuki Equator

In the latest episode of embargo-gate, there is now an image of the new Frontier-based Suzuki Equator up on the Net. The image was first provided by Truck Trend, and is now all over the Internet. An even better image arrived today thanks to Mike Levine over at PickupTruck.com.

As much as I hate badge-engineered vehicles, I have to say from the front this looks pretty good. Once you move over to the side profile it's pure Nissan Frontier. No word on the mechanicals, but one could assume it's probably no different than the Frontier.

Full story here at Autoblog, here at Jalopnik, and here at PickupTruck.com.

I wonder if they'll use the 2.7 V6 in the Grand Vitara as an engine choice.

I'd rather have a Frontier.

Any changes will be cosmetic and cosmetic only. Nissan is trying to use economy of scale to reduce cost and utilize capacity at Smyrna.

honestly - the front looks like it was lifted off a Dodge Ram

Really? I thought the front was lifted off the new Tundra.
The holey-bars in the grille - that's Tundra's grille design.
It would be nice if the Frontier/Equator gets the Pathfinder's updated center stack.

ya - I guess there is more Tundra than Ram... still not a unique design or truck. Yawn

It'll be cheaper than a Frontier, drive like a Frontier and hold up like a Frontier but nobody will buy it because resall will suck like a Suzuki and image won't a Frontier.

Kind of like the Isuzu badge S-10 and Colorado.

DMax and Colorado/Canyon are joint designs of Isuzu and GM. The Dmax version is better than the I series Isuzu and the Colorado.

My wish would be for Suzuki to sell a production version of the X-Head using Equator name, not the Frontier.

This arrangement is negative for Suzuki and positive for Nissan.

As to the Equator grill design, Suzuki should have used the X-Head grill for inspiration i/o the Tundra.

I just don't see the point. If I wanted a Nissan I would buy a Nissan.

Suzuki made some great little bargain vehicles in the past. How about making a bargain little pick up?

Rebadging is the mark of a dying company. Just as Isuzu.

The problem is Suzuki doesn't have any factories here in the USA. So if they were to build and import the X-Head—which I love—it would be subject to that hefty "chicken" tax of 25 percent, thus making it uncompetitive price wise.

The reason Isuzu died is because GM starved it to death and didn't offer a single unique thing under the brand. Suzuki has their own designs, most of which are great. The latest Grand Vitara is awesome and Suzuki's 4WD system has always been top-notch.

I see no reason to bash Suzuki for wanting to get into the small truck market by buying rebadged Frontiers. Although, what they SHOULD be doing is working with Nissan on the design aspect so they can learn from someone already in the market. Just like Honda did with Isuzu when they wanted to get into the SUV segment.

This could really pave the way for a really good production X-Head model.

CAMI Automotive is a Suzuki plant in Ingersoll, Ontario and is based on Suzuki's Kosai plant. It is a joint venture with General Motors Canada Limited.
No Chicken Tax is Suzuki manufactures in Ontario.
CAMI is currently underutilized.

Suzuki needs all the volume it can get, so this makes sense I suppose.

This move by Nissan and Suzuki should also help keep the price of the Frontier below that of the Tacoma and other competition by utilizing the same tooling and manufacturing for the two vehicles. Looks like a good move, another good move for Nissan might be taking the Frontier back to the 6 on 5.5 lug pattern as the previous Frontier and Hardbody trucks. My hope in all this with suzuki is that they might offer a stylish wheel that will fit my Frontier.

It looks much like a Dodge Ram huh, nice one though. Are the truck parts from that vehicle those of Suzuki's original or another copy from other vehicle?
