Full Test: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT

The 2008 G8 GT is the Pontiac we've all been waiting for.

It's fast. It handles well. It's comfortable. The Pontiac G8 is also a good value.

What do you think? Is it the best Pontiac ever?

Definitely the best Pontiac that has been produced lately. I wont say ever because I'm a big fan of the 1960s GTO.

What impresses me the most is the price. $33k is a bargain for such an awesome car. If i were looking for a midsize sedan, this would be it.

I want one.

Kudos to GM.

"Is it the best Pontiac ever?"

In the overall scheme of things, I think the original GTO was more significant, the TransAm was more flashy and the Firefly got better mileage.

This is however the 1st Pontiac I would buy in a very long time.

Welcome back GM, your winning streak continues. :)

Would it be too much to say that this is the best car you can get for $32k? I can't wait for the manual.

"I can't wait for the manual."

I'll second that!!

one thing I'm curious about is the lack of having navigation as an option even though there is already a screen for it.
the new Malibu isn't offered with navigation either though

One word sums it up:

Awesome.

The Charger should watch its back.

stovt001 - Feb 22, 2008 8:39 pm (#9 Total: 19)

Agree with Cah11705. Although I much prefer a portable aftermarket nav unit, enough people like them, and the margins are so high, I just don't understand why GM doesn't offer them. I mean it works out for people like me because then its easier to find on that doesn't have nav, but I can't help but think GM is missing out on some extra profits and sales.

Easily the best vehicle in Pontiac's current lineup, and possibly the best Pontiac ever. Poor man's 5 series indeed. I'd take one, but I think I'll go for the Camaro first. I don't need the extra space that badly.

I really like this car. It looks great (hood scoops being the exception) seems to drive great, good chassis composure, priced right, power...it looks as it has just about everything going for it.

I want to know if GM will use this same car elsewhere in any of its other brands? Like Chevrolet or Buick? Id like to see the Impala return to its RWD roots with a hot SS model, a more upscale version for the Buick division and maybe offer it with a twin turbo DI 3.6 TT reminiscent of the Gran National?

If GM decides to use this car outside of the Pontiac brand I truly hope they just dont stick another grill/badge on it and call it something else. There has to be some MAJOR distinction here.

buick in china and chevy in the middle east... i think also daewoo in korea
fwiw, i think, in my opinion, all of the above look better than the pontiac version.

It's a great start (I shouldn't say start out of respect for the Solstice, but that's such a small numbers car). If they keep it up, I do believe Pontiac will be in business.

hondacura4 - Feb 23, 2008 3:46 pm (#13 Total: 19)

Estreka, its all about a properly executed product and the G8 is a great example.

The Solstice while a great concept wasnt properly executed. Im not sure how as Pontiac/GM kept delaying its debut because they wanted to make sure everything was up to par. The next generation (if there is one) should be much better in terms of details.

daytona_500 - Feb 23, 2008 4:57 pm (#14 Total: 19)

hondacura4, whether or not the Solstice/Sky were properly executed or not, it still achieved its goal of beating the MX-5 in sales. As to your other question I believe the next Impala will be based on the Holden Statesman which is a very impressive car.

hondacura4 - Feb 24, 2008 5:30 pm (#15 Total: 19)

Daytona, Im not talking about sales as if that was the cars initial goal then it shows in the final product. The MX5 is STILL the superior car for similar money. Scratch the surface!

I think the biggest reason for no nav system is OnStar

This car looks essentially the same in all of various forms and brands in Asia and Australia. Those looking for substaintial brand differentiation might be a little disappointed. Do to CAFE, Lutz is leaning toward a FWD Impala anyway so the chances of seeing a high volume Zeta chevy sedan might be shelved. Our best chance may be a Buick slotted above the new Espilon II LaCrosse. Park Avenue???

GM seems to be on a roll. The CTS, the Lambdas, the Malibu, now the G8.

i think it looks better in the holden format!
