2009 Nissan GT-R Road Trip: Goes 130mph in the Dirt and Gets 17mpg

Inside Line refueling Nissan GT-R

Went through the GT-R's first tank of gas. After adding a bottle of octane booster (Lucas, supporting the sport, you know) the Nissan took 16.049 gallons of super unleaded to top it off. That translates to 17.0 mpg for the first tank, not bad considering we spent part of the time going in circles.

Nobody at the gas station took a second look at the GT-R, and when we stopped for lunch most of conversations in the restaurant seemed to revolve around boring stuff like growing food. Oh well, we expect to see slightly more interest when we pull into Sacramento Raceway.

Where else would you get 13 bottles of octane boost?

I saw this thing at the auto show. To be honest, I didn't give it a second look.

It may be up there in performance, but it really doesn't look like much.

Car may have incredible performance, but it doest have the lines of a Porsche, Audi, Infiniti or even a Corvette. Don't get me wrong, its not ugly, but a 350Z or G35 stirs up more emotions in the look department. If I wasn't flat out shocked by the performance numbers I wouldnt even be reading this article.

I like that it is a Q-ship, but anyhow the Nissan Skyline GT-Rs(and now just GT-R) has had a history of being called the Tokyo Taxis; previous models had little if any design glitz, it was all about the technology under the skin.

17 mpg! My Mazda RX-8 has half the power, less weight and get's 17 mpg in mixed driving. :-(

Maybe doing dirt donuts is good for fuel economy?

I've seen the car in person and it's pretty innocuous. In white it's downright bland. I can see why people wouldn't notice it or just think it's a modder car that maybe had been a Supra at one point.

Plz be certain to keep a close eye on your ride when you park it?
It would not be fun to return to a steering wheel and Club sitting where the GT-R used to be.

You have the wrong color. So no one noticed.

Is the fuel additives safe/efficient? Would you use them in your daily driver? And last but not least what does it mean not street legal? Did they put the label just for the hype or is there any law against it?

All octane boosters say that. There's nothing dangerous about them. All octane does is allow your gas to reach higher pressures before combustion. In my book, that makes your vehicle safer.
