London's mayor wants a 20 mph speed limit

London's Mayor Livingston, if re-elected, wants a 20 mph speed limit in residential sections of the city. If you recall, this is the same guy who wanted to apply a "congestion tax" to vehicles entering the city, which prompted a request for a judicial review by Porsche.

So, what are the odds of this guy getting re-elected to a third term? Think he's going to get the gearhead (or local business) vote?

Full story here.

I can ride faster on my bicycle. Will they ticket cyclists?

I agree. I have a road bike, and 20mph isn't an unreasonble average speed over five miles or so. People can sprint that fast (well, at least a couple dozen athletes).

I don't live in London, so I can't speculate at what the desired outcome of this is, but I would think the decrease in cars on the road would be outweighed by the fact that they're all taking up space for 20% longer. Glad it's not my town!

What kind of campaign platform is this? If Livingston was in America he'd be booed off of the stage so fast after proposing this he wouldn't know what hit him.

I'm not sure about British law, but you cannot be issued a speeding ticket in the States on a bicycle. It has to be a motorized vehicle.

As for the mayor, I think we should sic Jeremy Clarkson on him.
