The S&P 500 is down 8.35% so far this year. I think it's pretty hard to find a used car that loses 8% of it's value every 3 months or so without using it at Monster Truck Fest.

An 89 Cadillac Allante might become a collector item in 2059. I wouldn't hold my breath until then.
I also find the Benz wagon a bit odd as a collectible. I don't argue that it was a great car, but how many people really want to restore a family truckster?

If you await long enough, "any" car will become a collectible. It might take a 100 years, but it's happen...

I think you'll see one of the giant wood grained American Wagons from the 70's as a collectible long before that Mercedes wagon.
The Allante is a minor collectible only because it's rare and an interesting story to tell people who have never heard of it.
The Thunderbird is ugly.
The Supra will be a good choice if you can wait long enough.
The TR8's are already collectible but only for a very small market.
If a GTI becomes a collectible, it will be the 1st gen, not the 2nd.

TR8s are garbage! I agree with the others that the Benz wagon is not very likely to appreciate any time soon. Diesels of that era are noisy, dirty and weak and as noted in the article they would be a bear to restore. If I had to pick one to buy now and throw in the barn for 20 years it would be the Supra. Still looks beautiful.

I don't see why a car that wasn't popular today will suddenly grow in demand a few decades from now.
That T-Bird will be more like, say, a classic Edsel. Worth something, sure, more as a curiosity than a classic.
That may not be a good example, but pick a roadster that didn't sell well from 20 years ago, and that's how popular the T-bird will be 20 years from now.

My 6 would be:
1st gen 240ZX
4th gen Toyota Supra
3rd gen Mazda RX-7
Dodge Viper (any model)
BMW M3 (any model)
Honda S2000 (if discontinued)
Mini Cooper (any model)
Yes I know that's 7, but I can't throw one out.
Keep in mind, I've discluded vehicles I consider to have already achieved collector status (Grand National, any limited production model, or really expensive models, etc).

Estreka is 100% correct. Mini Coopers already have an insanely low depreciation rate, so they're already almost an investment.

The asking price of most of the 93-98 Supra Turbos Ive seen is just insane. I know this is one of the last overbuilt/overengineered Toyota vehicles and I know the build quality, durability, and performance potential is there but the prices are insane. Great car BTW.
