Subaru of America U.S Sales 0.3% Gain in 2008 Over 2007

Amazing but true! While the overall U.S. auto industry saw an 18.5% sales drop, Subaru of America reported a 0.3% sales increase for full-year 2008 sales over 2007, the only  multi-nameplate manufacturer in the top 15 to post a gain. Tim Colbeck, vice president of sales for Subaru of America said, "To post increased sales for the year the Industry has just experienced reflects the strength of our products, our dealers and the Subaru brand. In a difficult market we were able to establish new sales records for Forester, Impreza and Legacy sedan and also record our highest market share ever."

Subaru Forester556.jpg

The Subaru Forester, 2009 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year, led Subaru sales with 60,748 sold, a 36.4% increase over 2007 with a starting MSRP of $19,995. The Impreza, with variants like the WRX and WRX STI which traded on the Car Stock Exchange, had sales of 49,098, a 6% gain over 2007. The Outback had sales of 44,280, a 22.8% drop from the previous year but Subaru's 4th best seller, the Legacy had sales of 22,596 a 7.1% rise over 2007. The Tribeca contributed 10,975 to Subaru's total U.S. sales of 187,208. All Subaru's have Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive drivetrains. Subaru next door554.jpg

In my Southern California neighborhood I don't have to look too far to find a Subaru - next door and across street my neighbors have the Impreza WRX models. With this winter's heavy snowfall in many parts of the country, all-wheel drive shoppers could drive Subaru's 2009 sales past 2008. Also, to help that cause, Subaru will show a Concept Legacy Sedan this weekend at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

2008 Auto Sales: A Closer Look

To those mainstream media criticizing GM, Ford and Chrysler for making cars that Americans won't buy, the Detroit 3 sold a combined 6,349,084 vehicles or 48% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. last year. So why are they losing money?

Chrysler President & Vice-Chairman Jim Press told us on September 2nd, "Because we were spending money as a four million car company, we had the manufacturing capacity to do four million cars and trucks; the problem is, the revenue to pay for all that was only two and a half million." Press goes onto say, "We've taken a million capacity out of Chrysler in less than a year." Four months after those remarks we know that Chrysler sold less than 1.5 million in 2008 so that gap translates to a money-losing business until they scale back more and sales of profitable vehicles pick up.

Chrysler's sales fell 30% in 2008 from 2007 and much of that was by design. Press, in the same speech, said, "In terms of capacity, we've cut out alot of fleet volume on purpose." Why? "We were doing almost 40 percent of our volume for fleet, mainly daily rental." Press adds, "We weren't covering our overhead, and we were really hurting our residual values."

Ford F Series, Chevy Silverado and Dodge Ram had combined sales of 1,226,418 or about 9.3% of all vehicles sold in 2008 so people are buying pickup trucks. Press says, "If you look at full-size trucks and SUVs, it's about 2 million or a little less per year going forward. There's enough market there for us."

Volkswagen Jetta sales of 97,461 in 2008 represents 44% of VW's 223,128 U.S. sales and Audi A4 sales of 43,343 is 49.4% of Audi's U.S. sales.

Small cars helped luxury carmakers Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Mercedes-Benz sold 225,128 vehicles in 2008, an 11.2% drop from 2007, but add in the 24,622 smart cars sold, total Mercedes sales fell just 1.5%. The BMW brand sold 249,113, a drop of 15.2% but add the MINI to the mix with sales of 54,077, a 28.6% jump from 2007 and BMW total sales fell only 9.7%.

The number crunching continues.

Kia sold 273,397 vehicles, a 10.5% drop.

Mazda sold 263,949, a 10.7% fall. Mercedes-Benz, including Maybach and smart, had sales of 249,750, 1.5% fewer than 2007. Subaru, led by its Forester, sold 187,699 vehicles, a 0.3% gain over 2007. Mitsubishi sold 97,257 vehicles in 2008, a 25% slide from 2007. Suzuki sold 84,865 vehicles, a 17% drop. Porsche sales were 26,035, a 25% fall. 2008 sales itemized in this article is 13,148,326. (Jaguar/Land Rover, owned by Tata Motors are not included). 2007 U.S. auto sales were 16.1 million so there was a sales drop of about 3 million vehicles or 18%.

Sales figures were gathered from the manufacturers' websites.

November Car Stock Exchange Vehicle Sales

On the the same day that GM, Ford and Chrysler were on Capitol Hill looking for a staggering $34 billion in government hand-outs and loans, November auto sales were released showing a near 38% drop across all vehicle lines from November 2007 for an 11 month industry sales total of 12.3 million vehicles sold in the United States. Amazingly year-to-date both Subaru and Daimler, which includes Mercedes-Benz, smart and Maybach, have 1.2% gains over 2007 sales after 11 months.

The Lincoln MKS (a SEMA version shown above) has been trading on the Car Stock Exchange for 5 months and has already surpassed the Edmunds.com 6 month sales target of 9,000 while all other vehicles are well short of projections in the worst year for the industry in 26 years.

October Car Stock Exchange Vehicle Sales

Tiguanfront206.jpg

Two vehicles retired at the end of October and many other CSX-traded vehicles either went on sale or had their first full month on the market in October. The Pontiac G8 retired with 6 months of sales of 9,487, well short of the Edmunds.com estimate of 15,750 while on the positive side, the fun-to-drive peppy compact Volkswagen Tiguan (right) had sales of 6,533, falling well short of the 15,300 forecast in the first full six months in dealerships.

Five more vehicles will retire at the end of November and all look to far short of forecasts, though the Nissan Maxima could come close. The Lincoln MKS after four months on the market is poised to beat our sales target.

You may also notice on the chart below that some vehicles that we posted last month with one month sales figures are still at the one month stage - that's because it turned out it was not a full month. Some of you even commented on the Hummer H3T's sale of one vehicle in September, well, October's 251 is more like a full month on the market. Ditto for the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, VW Routan minivan and Chevy Traverse which really got rolling in October.

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI diesel started selling in October and hit sales of 2,967. Recently winning accolades for its fuel-efficiency could launch significant sales for this vehicle even in this poor economic environment.

GM sales were down 45%, Toyota fell 25.9%, Ford sales dropped 29.2%, Chrysler slid 35%, Honda down 28%, Nissan fell 33.5%, Hyundai slipped 31%, BMW was down 5% but without MINI saw a 13.9% drop, Kia sales slid 38.5% and, rounding out the top 10 sellers of 2008, Mazda sales were off 25.9% from October 2007. On the bright side, Audi set an October record with a 0.3% increase in sales over October 2007. On a year-to-date basis, MINI sales are up 30.2% and Subaru is up 2% with VW down just 0.6%. Car Stock Exchange September Vehicle Sales

A rough month for automakers on a weakening economy due to falling real estate, stock and credit markets. General Motors with employee pricing saw a 16% drop in sales last month from September 2007, Ford was down 34%, Chrysler slipped 33%, Toyota fell 32%, Honda sales were 24% lower than September 2007, Nissan saw a 37% drop, Kia had a 28% decline, Hyundai a 25% drop, BMW tumbled 30%, Mercedes down 16% and Volkswagen fell 9%.

Four of the five just-retired CSX stocks were based on vehicles which had sales that topped the estimates of our Edmunds.com experts led by the Hyundai Sonata and also included the Acura TSX, Subaru Forester and BMW 1 Series. The BMW X6 fell way short of the forecast. Two hot cars went on sale in September recording partial month sales: the Audi A4 had sales of 3,148 and the Mazda6 3,694. GM sold one Hummer H3T in September.

Next biggest surprise was the Dodge Journey which sold 30,025 in six months topping the projection of 15,750 by 14,275 in sales. The other six with better-than-expected sales in no particular order were the Subaru WRX STI, Nissan Murano, Chevrolet HHR SS, MINI Clubman, Pontiac Vibe and BMW M3.

The three worst performers were the GMC Yukon hybrid with sales of 1,059, a quarter of the 4,050 estimate along with the Infiniti EX35 selling 7,401, less than half the 13,500 forecast and the Saturn Astra at 7,155 in sales was a third of the 20,250 target.

Car Stock Exchange Vehicle Sales Data Through July

With 23 vehicles racing down the stretch run to retirement after six months of trading on the Car Stock Exchange, five have already surpassed our Edmunds.com forecasts after five months of sales with another four in position to eclipse the predictions that were made well in advance of their showroom sales launches. (See sales table at end of blog posting)

The Chevy HHR SS, MINI Clubman, Toyota Corolla, BMW M3 and Dodge Journey have all exceeded our six month sales targets after just 5 months with the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Nissan Murano, Pontiac Vibe and Hyundai Sonata positioned to push past those numbers when six months of sales are tallied up at the end of August. The Matrix version of the Corolla could also top the estimate.

Corolla273.jpg journey276.jpg

In shear numbers, the Toyota Corolla at 160,559 and the Dodge Journey at 25,438 after five full months of sales are very impressive compared to our team's forecasting. The Corolla is the number one selling nameplate of all-time and is benefitting from the buying shift while Dodge flooded the media with blanket marketing and advertising campaigns during big sports play-offs in the Spring.

The Soul is after Toyota Scion shoppers and others wanting to express their personality through small box-like designs with fuel efficient engines that have given Chrysler's PT Cruiser and Chevy's HHR wide popularity.

Lexus sold 710 all-new LX570 SUV's in January, its first full month on the market which puts it on track for 8,520 for 2008 but obviously each month won't be the same due to weather, budgets, rebates and incentives and many other factors.

Toyota sold 2,377 all-new Sequoia SUV's in January, like the Lexus, its first full month of sales and it puts it on track to do 28,524 this year but many variables can and will change that target.

Infiniti sold 690 all-new EX35 crossovers in its first full month on the market which multipied by 12 puts it at 8,280, but like the others in this blog, they are just getting started.

The 2009 Nissan Murano went on sale in January with sales of 2,900 which is 34,800 annualized...
