Audi e-Tron Electric Sports Car Gets Production OK Says Top Exec

We reported last month that Audi executives at the Frankfurt Auto Show said the stunning e-Tron concept, an all-electric version of the Audi R-8, could see limited production in 2012.

Now Autoweek - via the Straightline blog over at Inside Line - says that Audi of America's president, Johan de Nyschen, is confirming that the electric car's headed for production, with working prototypes excepted to be on the road within two years.

It can't happen too soon, far as we're concerned.

Although obviously intended for the wealthy - a Tesla Roadster fighter - a production Audi e-Tron would be one more step on the road to showing that EVs aren't just for off-the-grid, save-the-planet, tofu-munching electron geeks, but can be suitable cars for even the most red-blooded, go-fast-or-die performance aficionados among us.

The e-Tron concept Audi shown in Frankfurt - a downsized and restyled version of the R8 - boasted an electric motor on each wheel, delivering a combined 313 horsepower and a stunning 3,319 lb.-ft. of torque, good for 0-60 in 4.8 seconds.

A lithium-ion battery pack (no details), would give the four-wheel drive car a range of about 150 miles, Audi said at the time.

All we can say is, please tell us more!
