The announcement we all knew was coming arrived yesterday. BMW will build the Z4 coupe (sarcastic gasp!). It will go on sale in June and utilize a 255 horsepower inline 6. An "M" version will also be available, this one with the 3.2-liter from the M3.
I saw two of these driving up PCH about three months ago...
As they approched in oncoming traffic my first thought was, "What are those? They look very cool!" They passed by and I watched in my rearview mirror, but couldn't figure out where they were. Two days later I saw the first spy shots and realized what I'd seen. Unfortunately, I still don't like the hard lines on the side of the car. Because the profile was tough to see as they zoomed by I didn't notice the Bangle-esque lines -- which is also why I didn't recognize what they were. And just as with the Z4 convertible, I love the car's proportions. If I look at one with strong backlighting (creating a silhouette effect) I really like it. But given the chance to really "take in" the car's details sort of wrecks it for me. The coupe's roofline somewhat "de-emphazises" the car's body lines, but they're still there. Doubly unfortunate because this car also drives quite well. Too bad I'd never want to own one because of the bizarre styling in the details...

It has to buy a ticket to get into any Ugly Hall of Fame that includes the Z3 coupe.. By comparison, this car is a looker...
Unfortunately, compared with "normal" cars, it still makes me gag a little.. Give me a Cayman, any day...
I'd still like to drive it, though...

Hideous. Porsche is going to eat this thing for lunch. BMW is a great marque, sorry to see them going through this ludicrous design phase. My 02 325Ci (coupe) always got compliments.
