Woah! Spy Shots of 2008 Dodge Challenger!!!

We'll have sketches going up next week, and spy shots shortly thereafter (also shown at right, added 11/23), but I just saw the photos and if you think the new Mustang looks like the old one you ain't seen nothing yet.

Actually, think Ford GT in terms of using old-for-new inspiration. Everyone will see the car at Detroit, but imagine a "Foose-ized" (as in Chip Foose)1971 Dodge Challenger.

Pretty cool!..

Now where's my contact number for Dodge's special waiting lists...

Karl,

I though this new Dodge Challenger was going to be a 2010 model? Everyone else on the Internet says 2010 also. However Inside Line says 2009, with a Fall 2008 release.

Has Chrysler moved up the date? They should, as I'm sure this car will be a hit. Do you know exactly which year it will be?

Anyway, I'm really excited about this car. Throw in a 425 HEMI and we'll really have some muscle cars wars. A new Camaro and GTO are supposed to be coming in 2007 or so, so that should make things even more interesting! Buick is reportedly also spawning a rear drive coupe on that platform.

Just wondering, do your sketches and spyshots look look anything like this.

Amazing, isn't it?

This should be great as long as they have a cool and interesting interior, unlike the Magnum, Charger, and 300. To make this car extremely effective to all markets I would go with a base V6, and Turbo V6 for the tuners, and, for the muscle guys, at least one V8 option along with either a supercharged model of one of those V8's or possibly the 505 V10. Make it all start at a CHEAP price well equiped and I think that they have a sure winner unlike Chevy's attempt at the Monte Carlo.

I know the first reports talked about 2010 and/or 2009, but that's way too long in my opinion, and I think Chrysler realized this (thankfully). With the speed that GM showed on the Solstice and Ford showed with the GT, this should be a two year process, max (especially since it's coming off an existing platform -- LX -- while the Solstice and GT were all new from the ground up).

The photos I've seen look much more Dodge-like than the Autoblog image, which is basically a 1971 'Cuda with 20-inch wheels. Ironic that the 'Cuda is generally the more preferred of the classic Chrysler E-Bodies, because with the Plymouth division dead they don't even have an option of reviving that car. Or maybe they do. If you're into motorcycles you might know that Triumph recently released the "Rocket 3" even though that was a BSA model -- before BSA went out of business in 1973.

I'll look forward to seeing it. I still haven't really warmed up to the Charger.

My prediction is that this will be a pretty cool car, BUT:

1. Chrysler won't get it out until 2009 at the earliest, and the Mustang should already be looking at a refresh by then.
2. It's going to be $3-5K more than the V8 Mustang.

Call me skeptical.

Will Chrysler build it?

They certainly have a proven history of producing some pretty “far out” concept cars.

If it keeps the IRS from the larger siblings, and the 5 speed automatic \ manumatic (in addition to the 6 speed manual mentioned) at the reduced size (and weight?) of such a coupe, this might prove very interesting . . .

Also thinking the Charger just isn't of interest - to me . .

"1. Chrysler won't get it out until 2009 at the earliest, and the Mustang should already be looking at a refresh by then. "

And exactly how does one 'refresh' a retro styled pony car.

Acknowledging that this is largely a rhetorical question . .

Rumors going around on other sites say that this car will be 10k+/yr. production only. Sorry, no V-6 models. With the 425hp Hemi, look for it to compete with the Shelby (Cobra) 'Stang, and not the V-6 or GT models...

I happen to know for a fact that the challenger will be a 6.2 liter HEMI. It wll come out in 2008 to be a 2009 modle. I dont know what type of trans its going to have but i 6 speed manual would be freakin sweet
