Lincoln MKX and MKS

Anne Stevens and Peter Horbury hosted this conference and focused on the theme "American Dream."

The basic message was that Lincoln wants to appeal to American luxury car buyers, with Anne going so far as to say "Lincoln has no desire to compete on the world luxury car stage, because the competition is for buyers right here in America." Hmm, an interesting way to state Lincoln's goal.

Here's the basic rundown:

MKX (top image)
3.5-liter V6, 250 hp
6-speed transmission
All-wheel drive
I like the "Vista Roof" (giant sunroof) and interior layout, but let's be honest—this is an RX330 knockoff, and it's several years late to the party. They say being late to the party is OK if you're the best dressed and/or most interest guest when you finally arrive. We'll see...

MKS Concept (bottom image)
4.4-liter V8, 315 hp
Six-speed automatic
All-wheel drive
The similarity to the Lexus GS is unavoidable from the outside, but I do like the squared-off exhaust outlets. Unfortunately, the "trademark" Lincoln waterfall grille just doesn't work for me, just as it doesn't on other Lincolns. Lots of cool interior features on this one, and the dash is said to be covered in suede—as was the press kit folder for these vehicles (at least it felt like suede). First time I've seen that use of animal hide.

MKX looks good to me. I do wish it made more power than the Ford Edge, though.

MKS is less successful. I see a Daewoo Leganza profile in it. The rest is OK, but it just doesn't have the aura of a luxury car.

I think the MKS is a step in the right direction for Lincoln, and they need to make it ASAP. It's not going to be a class leader or anything but it still has the right stuff and the engine has plenty of juice. I find the styling classy and attractive but derivative of many cars. The front looks a bit like an Acura TSX or TL, with a bit of Honda Civic.

Hopefully this is Lincoln's long awaited answer to the STS, M45, RL, G430 and others.

MKS is ACURA esque in an American sort of way which is great, but the rear tailights look like a lousy Saturn. The Interior is fabulous! Front and sides are nice, but please extend that tail light over onto the trunk to get rid of that Saturn look-ouch...whith that you've got a winner!!
