2006 Lamborghini Gallardo -- First Impressions

We picked up the Lamborghini Gallardo test car today. It's a 2006 SE with 20 additional horsepower (for a total of 520), the E-Shift transmission (same exact unit that Ferrari uses, but with different "tuning") and painted a shade of Aranco Borealis (think sherbert ice cream). I've only driven it on the freeway and at slow speeds for photos so far, but my first impressions are as follows:

1. It feels heavier than either the F430 or the Ford GT. But at roughly 3,200 it's only about 100 pounds heavier than the Ferrari (and around 300 less than the Ford). This feeling may be psychological, as the steering and brake effort are definitely higher than the GT or F430.

2. I'm not thrilled with the engine note. It effectively splits the difference between the GT and F430, sounding more subdued than the Ferrari but not as deep, or meaty, as the GT. I really like the exteme nature of those other two, but this one sounds sort of middle-of-the-road, which certainly doesn't go with its looks (or the nature of any exotic).

3. The interior is lovely. Not surprising considering the parent company. I also like the button for raising the front when dealing with driveways and speed bumps. Also, the transmission seems to work a little better than in the Ferrari, particularly in "auto" mode, where there is minimal head toss between gears.

We're generating numbers at the track tomorrow. Stay tuned...

Lambroghini's got the front end right on this one. It needs a butt-lift on the back. Otherwise, the car is spectacular, and provides a great alternative in the supercar market to the boys at Ferrari.

Just got back from the track. We got a zero-to-60 time of 4.1 (uncorrected), and it was damn quick through the slalom, too. Best trait? Turn off ESP, punch the throttle and it will slide the rear end as if those front wheels are only there to steer it. COOL!

Something about the gallardo I dig...I think it's the car's small, chiseled appearance. It just seems so purposeful. Like kinda sporty but not "please look at me" like the Ferrari 430.

I love the Gallardo's styling, one of the best looking exotics made. It's the perfect fusion of luxurious German interiors with Italian styling and heritage.

I saw a Gallardo recently near a mall in red, it was beautiful.
