Anyone Wanna Buy an Automotive Icon?

If you've always had a hankerin' to drive exotic cars for a living, and the folks at Ferrari's test facility aren't returning your calls, you might be in luck. Well...there is one caveat -- it will take a good chunk of change. But if you have the funds you could be the proud owner of Motor Trend magazine (along with a gaggle of other Primedia titles like Hot Rod, Car Craft, Automobile, and - my former employer - Super Street).  You can read the corporate spin here , but the real story is simple: Big-wig executives invest more time/energy in cutting wages and overworking employees than they do in the future of publishing. Meanwhile, Internet offers whole new way to reach readers while more effectively serving advertisers...

Corporate clones panic and further cut costs (and employee dignity) to make company appear profitable -- then attempt to get out before their golden parachutes turn copper.

Sad really, as many of the books over there have never looked better (despite the executives' best efforts to demoralize the workforce).

I think you're better off waiting for Ferrari to call back...

Uh oh, I hope these magazines aren't in danger. I read some of them (SCC's the only one I pay for regularly). For mainstream car stuff the internet's better right now, but SCC's website is garbage, and it's nice to read real paper sometimes (easier on the eyes).

Well I for one won't miss Motor Trend, if it doesn't survive. Its salad days have long since passed....

I do like Automobile though -- pretty to look at, but I get my auto news from the Internet.

I used to read Motor Trend regularly as well as Automobile but have since stopped because Edmunds is a much better source and a more immediate source for the same info. Plus I don't get to make comments on the aritcles I read like I get to here...

I like being able to express my thoughts and points of view and have people comment back. I think the digital info age will eventually spell the end of a lot of print magazines, but like the newspaper, there will still be a few around, Just not sure which ones.

Motor Trend is better than it's ever been, I now read it semi-regularly for the first time in my long life. Unfortunately the field is overcrowded and it's survival is not a good bet.
