2008 Detroit Auto Show: Surprise! Lots of Crossovers!

Our 2008 Detroit Auto Show preview is up, and among the world premiers is the most powerful Corvette ever, the next-generation Ford F-150 and the first redesign of Honda's highly-successful Pilot. I'm intrigued by the powerful Corvette and Cadillac CTS-V that will debut in Detroit, but I'm more impressed by what appears to be a serious green showing by Chrysler. Despite its access to the same two-mode hybrid transmission that GM is using in the Tahoe, Chrysler has the farthest to go in achieving real-world fuel-mileage gains.

Of course it wouldn't be a modern auto show without a crossover or six. Beyond the Pilot you can expect to see the next Subaru Forester, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLK, the all-new Kia Borrego, the all-new Toyota Venza and the Land Rover LRX Concept.

And if V8 performance cars, full-size trucks and crossovers are too mainstream for you, Mitsubishi's "Concept" is a sports car powered by a 2.2-liter turbo diesel.

Look for our "from-the-floor" coverage of Detroit to begin on December 13th.

January 13th?

What do you think about the new Pilot?

Do you think that it will be better than the Lambdas?

bring on the CTS V because the rest of that stuff sounds boring to me. You didnt mention the two mode Vue hybrid.

1487-
The new Corvette ZR1 seems boring to you? Supercharged LS7 producing more than 625bhp? If thats boring wow! But I agree on the CTS-v can't wait to see the specs on that!

The Kia Borrego is not a crossover. It's a body-on-frame SUV.

I certainly hope this new Pilot will be more stylish than the current box on wheels. Judging by the new Accord, I'm sure they will push it too far. I can't wait to count the buttons on the dash. I guarantee the press will rate the new Pilot higher than the Lambdas.

The new Kia SUV is a looker and seems very promising. The GLK seems stupid and will be overpriced just like the X3.

Bring on the ZR1- this thing will be an absolute beast. CTS-V will have a monster motor but very heavy unless they add carbon fiber panels

The really interesting cars in that lot are the CTS-V and the Corvette ZR1, stuff like the Forester and the GLK are boring.

This Toyota Venza sounds like a dumb idea, they're just trying to create new market segments out of nothing.

considering how much the press has praised the also-ran Pilot I can only imagine how much they will love the new one. CR still ranks the Pilot as the 2nd best midsize SUV on the market. Even the lambdas couldnt outscore the aging Pilot. If C&D has the Pilot on their 5Best trucks list this year I might cancel my subscription because that is too much to take, even from them.

ZR-1 isnt boring at all, I just didnt count it because its been released already.

The only cars any self respecting American should care about here is the Vette and Cadillac CTS-V.

The rest of it is just pedestrian junk. Except for the hybrid Vue that 1847 mentioned. Expected to be a surefire hit at the show.

Pilot vs Lamba

I too like the Lambas however they current pilot has an large advantage in price. I have not shopped the lambdas but when I load em up they are over 40k. That to me is the big difference. 35, 26 fully loaded would be a no brainer.

1487,

Unless C+D's categorization formula prevents them from running head to head, I would guess there's a 51% chance they'll jump on the CX9 bandwatgon, 37% chance they'll pick a Lambda, 5% Highlander, 4% Pilot and 3% other.

Last year, the Lambdas and the CX9 were elibible but not available. Dunno if that puts them out of the running for this year (since past losers earn an automatic disqualification). If so, that'd be a huge "not fair" and I think the Highlander might be a shoe-in.

murphy, the Lambdas offer features more inline with the MDX and RX350 as opposed to the Pilot. 19" wheels, Xenon HIDs, 5.1 digital sound, head up display, remote start, power tilt/telescope, power folding autodimming outside mirror, two row sunroof, etc.

I could've design a more streamlined SUV with my old Legos than Honda managed with this current generation Pilot.

I find it interesting that none of the publications have compared the Lambdas to the Pilot or Highlander, the supposed best in class. MT compared an Acadia to a CX-9 and MDX but took off points because it wasn't "sporty." I never knew GM marketed these trucks as sporty but MT must've missed that memo. Once this new Pilot is introduced, it won't matter if GM built a superior CUV for one model year because the press will say that they are once again behind class leader.

Just remember Chavis, when all those Pilots and Highlanders are sitting dead on the side of the road or have their engines sludged up, transmissions blown, I will be waving to them as I drive by in my flawless GM that was panned by the media as not good enough.

No matter how much slobbering the editors do over the new Pilot and this ugly new Highlander that is out right now, I'm sure most people already know GM builds a superior Lambda. It is the media who are the clueless ignoramuses.

Let them keep making themselves look like idiots. We can vote with our dollars.

I was going to comment on the subject but I think Ill keep it to myself as some of the closed minded comments erased my interest with this thread.
