Just saw a yellow Porsche 912. Looked clean and all original. Are those things actually worth money these days? If "yes" -- why?

Does it matter if it's worth money? Sounds like the owner is having fun and taking pride in his ownership responsibilities. And given the right combination of circumstances, I can't imagine a good 912 being that hard to keep clean and original.

Absolutely doesn't matter if it's worth money or not. I'm just curious if, like Pintos and Pacers, these originally "laughed at" cars have found a following that pays good money for them.

In all these cases I again ask -- "Why?"

Because they are pretty rare these days I believe. My father has one and its fun to drive. Slow, but fun. My Uncle has one as well. They have a decent following.

Slow? Really?

The 356C, which preceded it, had the same engine. While not super fast, it was never considered slow.

Well, I am a bit biased, owning my 2nd 912: a 69 with a sunroof. But here's my take...

Iconic shape - the 901 body design is timeless.

912's are easier to work on and maintain. Mine is my daily driver 3/4 of the year even here in New England. Reliable and fun, every day.

Fast/slow is entirely subjective. With a decent engine build it's pretty snappy due to light weight, extremely well balanced, and has a wonderful sound. I cruise on the highway just as fast as the rest of traffic easily and can get about 30mpg on highway trips with stock Solex carbs.

So- worth? Good ones can fetch around $20k, drivers who need love can be had under $10k. Keep it in good shape and it will appreciate. As much as a 911S? Probably not, but that's not what most people want from a 912. It's a classic you can work on and drive.

Cheers,

Jason
