Dream Car Corner: You Get to Have Five for Every Ten

Genie Leno.jpg

The other day I went to add oil to one of our long-term cars when the strangest, yet most wonderful thing, happened. Upon unscrewing the cap and pouring out some 10W-30, a genie that looked like Jay Leno popped out.  "Ummm...Hi Jay.  What's up?  Bummer they closed down the Supercar Sunday event in Calabasas, eh?" was all I could think of to say.  I was just glad it wasn't that crazy Scotsman with the dipstick.

Jay's Genie twin said "Relax John, You probably have guessed that I'm here to grant you some wishes of the automotive persuasion.  You get to amass a 30-car car collection spanning the last six decades, from the '50s to the '00s.  Every week you get to pick five cars, two American and two Foreign, and a bonus one of either from each decade.  And don't worry about not having space for them, you can keep them at my Big Dog Garage and my guys will keep them mint for you.  We're going to start with the most recent decade.  So whaddya want kid?"

2000-2009:

American:

2006 Ford GT:
ford gt.jpg

Sexy exotic car styling, supercharged 550-hp V8 and staggering performance numbers such as 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and a top speed over 200 mph. The fact that it's the resurrection of a '60s racing icon that beat rival Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966 (by taking the top 3 spots) is just icing on the cake. Tungsten grey with light grey stripes.

2002 Pontiac Trans Am:
2002 trans am.jpg

What, no ZR1 or Z06? I love 'vettes but what can I say?  I've always had a soft spot for Firebirds and this is the last year you could get one. Besides, I've already got a Ford GT and a black WS-6 with its Ram Air V8 would do me fine.

Foreign:

2009 Lotus Elise SC:
Lotus Elise SC.jpg

Anyone who loves driving will see why I picked this hyper-athletic Lotus. Next to an Ariel Atom, it's the closest thing to a street-legal racing kart.  And you won't get wet if it rains. I'll take an orange one, so the catatonic LA drivers have a better chance of seeing me and not running me over.

2009 Aston Martin DB9 Volante:
Aston Martin DB9 Volante.jpg

So beautiful, I could just park it in my living room, cancel my cable TV subscription and stare at it.  But with a 470-hp V12, I don't think I'd be doing that.  Merlot with beige hides and hood.

Bonus:

2008 Ferrari F430 Spider:
ferrari f430 spider.jpg

Do I even need to qualify this choice?  Didn't think so.  I like an open car, hence me taking the F430 and not a 599.  Fly yellow is cool, but I'll take silver with red leather.

What would y'all pick for the "naught-y" decade?

Ooh, fun game. Throwing practicality to the wind and stocking up on dream cars only.

American:
2009 Corvette ZR-1 - Duh. Black.

2009 Dodge Viper - "base" model, not one of the racecar variants. I'll take it in some bright and obnoxious color.

Foreign:
2006 Ferrari 575M Maranello - I prefer the front-engine V12 GT types to your F430. I think the 550/575 was way better looking than the 599 or 612. Although I do love the new California, but I need a traditional manual transmission. Red of course, with tan interior.

Ditto on the 2009 Aston Martin DB9 Volante. Simply beautiful.

Bonus:
Let's make it a true supercar. I pick the Porsche Carrera GT. I think it's prettier than the Ford GT, Enzo, or Veyron.

Pretty close to my choices (certainly can't argue with the first one). I'd probably swap the Firebrid for an SRT8 Challenger (and burn my Firebird slot when the 1970s comes up...). Also, I'd go BMW Z8 instead of the Exige, and maybe a 911 insted of the DB9, but maybe not.

Regardless, I could live with these choices just fine.

E39 BMW M5: Emola red exterior and interior. Manual.

Aston Martin DBS: Casino Royale exterior, red and black Alcantara interior. Manual.

First gen Mini Cooper S: Electric Blue exterior, black and blue leather interior. Manual.

Domestic:
Dodge Challenger R/T: Black, manual

Tesla Roadster: Yeah, I'm having trouble thinking of two American cars I really desire. So why not have the first electric roadster? Racing Green, tan interior.

American:

Ford GT - Probably the best American racing car ever.

Corvette ZR-1 - Best Corvette ever?

Foreign:

Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spyder - Sure the drop-top slightly negates the seriousness of the Scud, but who doesn't want to hear that wailing V8 even more? Oh, and I love the stripe.

Aston Martin DB9 Coupe - Great for road trips...I'd get it in something subtle like gray or black.

Bonus:

Audi R8 - One of the most unique car designs I have ever seen.

Doug, the Lotus Evora is a 2010. You'd better bench one for 10 years time.

Crap, the Z8 came out in 2000. I thought it was 1999.

OK, bump the Mini. Make my Z8 dark grey with a black interior.

Wow I completely forgot about the Tesla. I'd probably have that over the Vette since I already have the GT. Plus the Tesla is a genuinely innovative bit of engineering.

The Tesla is a supremely silly car to me...unless it's free. In that case I would be interested.
