Dream Car Corner: Mecum's Candy Store Auction

1969 Trans Am Conv.jpgRight now the Mecum classic/collector/musclecar auction in Indiana is taking place. This is the big Kahuna of Mecum's auctions and is claimed to be the world's largest auction. The Mecum auctions are fun to watch for a few reasons. First, they have tons of interesting cars, including some very rare "birds" such as this one-of-only-eight-ever-made, fully-documented 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am convertible.

And then there's the slapstick entertainment provided by one of the bidder assistants (the auction house employees that coerce bidders into every-higher bids). This assistant goes by the nickname of "Chicken George" and he's a riot. After congratulating one buyer on his winning bid for a 1972 Corvette, Chicken George patted the guy on the back, grabbed the cigar from the bidder's mouth, put it in his own mouth and then attempted to put the stogie back in the bidder's mouth, whose look of utter disgust was hilarious.

Mecum's site provides all the details on this current auction (which runs through Sunday), including a photographic list of the cars sold/to be sold and what times the auction will air (primarily on HD Theatre TV and briefly on Discovery Channel). To see the actual sold prices you have to "join" the site, which just consists of providing your e-mail address.

I always thought that 69 T/A ragtops had blue tops, not white... can anyone confirm or deny this?
