Another Monterey Weekend in the bag, and while it took me over a week to gather and size these images I'm finally able to present them here. I didn't have all the highfalutin camera equipment -- okay, or photography skill -- of Mr. Takahashi when shooting my Weekend activities, but I did capture some cool items, particularly if you're a fan of muscle cars.
Yeah, you won't see as many wire-spoked wheels as in Mark's coverage, but on the plus side you won't see as many wire-spoked wheels as in Mark's coverage (ha!). Enjoy.
Some of the biggest news of the weekend came in form of an all-new, 2011 Ford Boss 302 Mustang, displayed and driven around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The black model is the Laguna Seca trim, which is about as track ready as any street-legal Mustang ever built.
Here I am (tan pants) getting out of the new Boss 302 Mustang after a hot lap around Laguna Seca. I can't talk about how the car performed, so...I'll just shut up now...
This is a Dodge Viper, sort of. It's the car they used for the television series, Viper, and it was on the auction block at Mecum. Bidding stalled at $270,000, with a $300,000 reserve. I don't get it either. Maybe it was that killer toy slot track?
Another Mecum car, this one a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6. Bidding stalled at $125,000, reserve was $130,000. After the SD455s of 193-1974 this is probably my favorite GM muscle car (in these colors, too).
Saturday at Laguna Seca had all the historic racing action you could ask for. My favorite class (surprise!) is the 1966-1972 Trans Am group, seen here dicing around turn 4.
Another interesting class was the 1981-1989 FIA Mfg. Championship and IMSA GTP class, which included the number 77 Mazda GTP car driven by Patrick Dempsey ("McDreamy" to your wife and mine).
Sunday at the 60th Annual Pebble Beach Concours 'd Elegance saw one of my favorite cars of all time, the 1966 Jaguar XJ13 prototype that was built for LeMans but never competed (obsolete before it ever raced).
Oh yeaaaah! It's the Ferris Bueller car in blue, which may be sacrilegious to many but was georgous to my eyes. Of course like all great designs the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder looks good in any color.
Last but not least, if you're wondering how the new Boss 302's exhaust note compares to the original, watch this 18-second video. I think it compares pretty well.
