Karl on Cars: When Auctions Attack! Managing the Monterey Weekend

Monterey Auctions.jpgI'm fortunate enough to be attending the Monterey Weekend in a few days on the picturesque Monterey Pennisula. This is the weekend when a collection of the country's -- and in many cases, the world's -- best automobiles gather to celebrate their history and heritage.

Every year the schedule of don't-miss automotive activities gets more tightly packed, meaning unless you've got that cloning thing down you're going to miss something. I'm used to the barrage of parties, car shows and racing action scattered across the pennisula, but now even the auction activity is beyond what a single person can manage (assuming they ignore everything else going on up there).

This is not a complaint, just an observation. The list of dream cars on sale this weekend is pretty astonishing. I've grabbed a random sampling below:

1971 Lamborghini Miura S
1949 Jaguar XK120 Alloy Roadster
1957 Merceded-Benz 300 SL Roadster
1972 Ferrari 365 Daytona Spider
1965 Shelby GT350 Prototype for 1966 model
1966 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C Roadster
2001 Ford Forty Nine Concept
2002 Lincoln Continental Concept
1948 Tucker 48 Sedan
1988 Porsche 959
2003 Ferrari Enzo
1962 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster

I'm willing to bet that anyone with a shred of automotive enthusiasm sees at least one of their dream cars in the list above. It's pretty crazy when you consider the number of cars, and the amount of money, that will change hands over the course of four days.

I'm hoping to hit at least two of these auctions in between my other obligations, but I'll only see a fraction of the vehicles crossing the block live. Which means I'll still be setting my DVR to record the Mecum auction on HD Net, even though I'll be there in person. Too funny.

If none of the cars in the list above turn your crank, here's one more -- a 1969 ZL1 Camaro owned by Reggie Jackson. Mr. Jackson will be selling 15 of his cars at Mecum, and if I'm lucky I might get to meet him and ask about being a custodian for such amazing machines. I'll post pictures if it happens.

If i got to pick three, it would be the 300 SL, Daytona, and Tucker. Though I would be tempted to take the Camero pictured over the Daytona. Back in reality I aspire to have a classic clunker someday.

I don't think I could go to an auction like this. I'd be alternating between extreme joy since I would be in the presence of such wonderful machines, and heartbreak, because I cannot afford any of them. Sigh.
