Think of the progress the automotive industry has made in the last couple of decades. Increased power and efficiency from engines, higher build quality, electronic driver aids, safety features and convenience items that would've boggled our minds in the 1980's. We've gone from crackly AM signals to satellite radio and rear DVD entertainment systems. In this spirit, Associate Editor Mark Takahashi and Photo Editor Kurt Niebuhr face-off, defending their favorite feature that has debuted in recent years. Takahashi contends that iPod integration has been the most significant, while Niebuhr champions the cause of heated/cooled seats.
Opening Statements:
Mark Takahashi for iPod integration: I remember eight tracks in cars. Those were dark days. We had one in our family van and it was just about impossible to find the song you were in the mood for and you couldn't rewind. Then there were cassette tapes, which were better because some tape decks would automatically stop at the gaps between songs. But after repeated play, the sound degraded and if you left them in a hot car too long it got even worse. CDs were a step in the right direction, with zero degradation after repeated plays. All of these formats, though, suffered from portability issues. I recall various cars in my past with a Case Logic case filled with cassettes or a volume of CDs filling my back seat.
I constantly found myself shuffling through my music collection, trying to find that song that was stuck in my head. Then there was the issue of sound quality. My tapes began sounding like my speakers were filled with cotton and my CDs would skip over rough roads or in tightly sprung cars.
No more. Thanks to iPods (or other personal music devices, if you actually use something else), I can have my entire music library in the palm of my hand. The worst roads in L.A. can't get it to skip and the sound quality is excellent. I never have to rummage through piles of plastic to find Pavarotti singing the Turandot or the Black Crowes screaming out Hard to Handle. For me, iPod integration is both safer for all on the road with little in the way of faults.
Kurt Niebuhr for heated/cooled seats: I'm going to start this off with a disclaimer. Mark and I agreed to not talk about big stuff like direct injection, anti-lock brakes or stability control systems. Instead, we agreed to focus on the little things. After all, it's the little things in life that make the most difference and often bring the most satisfaction. So, at the risk of sounded like a complete softy, I've chosen heated and cooled seats.
I know most of you just pushed my credibility down the well but hear me out. Remember, it's the little things. I've never had a problem with long road trips (I tend to iron man them, stopping only to refuel) nor have I had a problem with cold weather. I love to drive with the windows open, even on chilly nights and there is nothing better that having the seat heaters on high, keeping me warm, while the cold air rushes through the car.
And the cooled seats? I know you're laughing pretty hard at that one, but those are probably the biggest and most pleasant surprise I've encountered in a long time. I drive over 20 thousand miles a year, and a lot of those miles are in traffic. I survived just fine for over 30 years without them, but once I tried them the just helped to take the edge off. And when you're stuck in snarling traffic for hours every day, I can honestly say that cooled seats have made traffic jams less stressful.
Rebuttals:
Takahashi: Heated and cooled seats? Really? Well, perhaps you'd like the Honda Odyssey that I'm currently testing. It's got heated seats and a hook on the side of the center console for your purse. Oops, I mean European travel tote.
Ok, fine, I see the merits of heated and cooled seats, but they can't beat iPod integration for usefulness. Faced with the choice, I'd rather be able to connect my iWhatever to the car and enjoy all of my favorite tunes versus having my posterior climate controlled whilst suffering through the endless commercial breaks and banal contemporary pop that passes for music these days.
Niebuhr: You know what's frustrating? When technology doesn't work. Good technology is supposed to be seamless but what happens when your iPod doesn't just 'work' when you plug it in... assuming you can plug it in at all? If you're lucky, you'll need to buy some expensive cables, from the factory of course, only to find that the iPod interface lacks common sense. The one agreement among the editors is that a bad iPod interface can ruin the time you spend in a car and cause you to revert back to the radio because you've given up on cd's. Good luck finding the perfect car with the perfect iPod interface.
By contrast, heated and cooled seats work the same in every car. They are not the cause of frustration, they just help alleviate it. While you're cursing your technology, I'm relaxing in mine. It doesn't get me to work any quicker, but remember, it's all about the little things.
So who gets your vote?

While neither can hold a candle to good steering/chassis/engine/shifter/etc, I would probably go with iPod integration. Silence in traffic only serves to highlight the fact that you're wasting your life away.

Neither one would make a difference to me when buying a car.
Great chassis - yes
Smooth engine - yep
Xenons - yes
Keyless entry and start - heaven to have but not necessary - this is a tech that makes things better.
Bluetooth integration - that makes things easier and better.
Leather, stereo, moonroof, power anything, ipod, auto HVAC, navi - nope. Don't care about any of it. My ipod is currently a toy for my 2 year old. I don't use it, so if he wants to carry it around and toss it all over the place, fine. My cell phone can, if I want, carry music, pandora can play music and honestly I barely do that outside the home too.

I absolutely must have bluetooth connectivity for my iPhone for work calls during my commute, but I couldn't care less about connecting an iPod to my car for music. I have the cable, and it's a huge pain in the butt to get the thing to work properly. Apple updates the software... WHOOPS... the iPod interface in the car works differently, fussier or not at all until the next update. So I've just stopped using the cable at all.
My car has Sirius/XM and two memory card slots that hold thousands of commercial free music. I'll take the climate controlled seats. Listening to music through my iPod in the car is of no value to me at all, but fanny warmers are really nice!

A hard choice, because on longer drives I definitely want some music around and I like cooled seats on hot days (had them in an Expedition that is no longer in the personal fleet, and I do miss those seats).
My one experiment with iPod integration as, um, less than ideal (iLink basically sucks on my Accord, waste of a couple hundred dollars. No shuffle play?!??!? Good grief). One friend of mine has it on his X5, and it works pretty well there, but the manufacturers are definitely hit or miss, and I'm not thrilled trying to manage an iPod with 20 playlists and 4,000 songs through a single-line interface on the stereo. For me, I use the audio jack in the car and that works fine for me right now.
Heated and cooled seats are awesome, though. On longer drives, it actually doesn't matter as much because the seats will heat/cool enough over time with the cabin air. But, having heat initially on cold days, or cooling initially on hot days, is great, particularly if you are in and out of the vehicle several times in a day.
In the end (hah!) I'll go for the seats. All cars now come with an audio in jack, and that's good enough for me, I can live without full iPod integration.

I don't have an iPod or other solid state audio device. Maybe I need to get myself out of the '90s, but all my vehicles have MP3 CD players, and that's fine by me.
So my vote goes for heated/cooled seats. Just as nice on a sub-zero winter morning as on a triple digit summer afternoon.

I'm going with heated/cooled seats. I have heated seats in my car and I wish it has cooled seats; that would be a blessing during the summer.
I may be one of the few that don't own an iPod, but I do enjoy XM Radio which stays on the classic rock channels.

I have cooled seats in my Maxima and I don't think I will ever buy another car without this must-have in South Florida feature.

Since my car stereo has satellite & a hard drive for local storage of MP3s, iPod (or more to the point "MP3 player" since I wouldn't sacrifice my personal integrity and buy anything that Jobs sells) integration means little.
Heated seats I have & love even if I can only use them part of the year. I've never had the pleasure of having cooled seats but I'm sure that, given the hot summers that complement our cold winters here in the Chicago area, I'd enjoy them as well.
I'll agree with blueguydotcom:
HIDs are a genuine improvement in the nighttime driving experience.
Keyless entry & start make the everyday driving task just a little easier but to the point it eases things every single time you drive.
I'd add other conveniences:
- Rain-sensing wipers.
- Auto on/off headlights.
- Auto climate control.
- Memory seats.
The first three I have and enjoy; the last I don't have but would like in my next car.

I would take a tape player in my car over iPod integration. I listen to books on tape. MP3 books are a pain to deal with.

ipod integration vs navigation vs. bluetooth would have been a better comparison.
heated seats? really?

Mark's argument is off base. He compares MP3 technology to tapes and CDs. This isn't about playback tech. It's about integration of whatever tech into the car stereo. A simple AUX jack, which has been around forever, will allow you to play your MP3s on your car stereo. You don't need ipod integration.
Heated/Cooled seats are an easy winner for me.
