2008 Yukon Denali: Bring da Bling (and da Money)

I saw those 20-inch chrome wheels, the rear-view camera and that DVD entertainment system and I knew this 2008 GMC Yukon Denali wasn't going to be cheap. But the $55,000 MSRP still caught me by surprise when I finally pulled the window sticker from the glovebox.

It's not that the Yukon doesn't feel like an excellent SUV. The 6.2-liter, 380 horsepower V8 gets the ute rockin' down the highway, and steering/brakes are as good as any modern body-on-frame SUV. I did notice a slight flutter in the ride quality, but I'm not sure if it was 101 freeway expansion joints or an unbalanced front wheel. Seat comfort and interior materials are also first rate, and while the grille is a blatant Escalade knock-off, it does look good.

So yeah, it feels like a good SUV...but not a $55,000 SUV. I suppose with Mercedes GLs starting at $54,000 and Infiniti QXs starting at $53,000 I shouldn't be questioning the wisdom of spending 50 large for a large people hauler -- but I do. Especially when the V8 is rated at 12/19 mpg in EPA testing. Of course, the Mercedes 5.5-liter V8 rates 13/17 and the Infiniti gets 12/18, so the Denali's numbers are actually pretty good. Bring on that hybrid version ASAP.

Still, at $55,000 to buy and $3-a-gallon to feed (at 12/19 mpg) you better really need all that seating/hauling/towing ability offered by these beasts of burden. The sales figures of large SUVs over the past year suggest many of the people who don't need these things are finally realizing it (with recent economic factors no doubt assisting their education...).

Me? I'd get a loaded up but still less expensive, less thirsty Acadia and call it a day. Putting every option on GMC's Lambda couldn't get it above $48,000, and that vehicle still tows 4,500 pounds (it rides and handles better, too).

Karl, the price is actually reasonable. Just think about it: fully loaded Accords cost $31k these days. A fully loaded 335i will cost about the same as this Denali. An Acura MDX costs around $40k....and that's a unibody crossover that's not worth what this truck is in terms of utility and strength. I remember that the new fully-loaded Sequoia you talked about in your blog cost this much.
And you said the Mercedes GLs and Infinity QXs "start" at around $54k. But we all know that starting price is a scam: when the GL and QX are loaded to this level they would probably cost about $70k....and those don't have this Yukon's towing abilities......

So the Yukon Denali is reasonably priced by today's standards. Sad but true.....And it looks cool: I just wish it had better off-road abilities to back up those looks, but at least it can tow!

"Who at GM still thinks that chrome wheels are cool?"

a lot of people think they are cool based on the sales of GM's large SUVs. Just because chrome offends the Prius/Fit lovers doesnt mean no one likes it on their vehicle. If anything import manufacturers are using more chrome than ever.

The denali costs too much but so do 90% of the SUVs on the market so its no exception. If you really need to tow a V6 crossover isnt going to get the job done. The Lambdas arent that fast with one person on board so you can rest assured they would struggle with a full load and trailer. They just dont have enough torque.

The QX56 is so ugly that its not even worth mentioning in comparison to the Denali. Not to mention its V8 cant hold a candle to the GM 6.2L V8.

Fantastic. I still think it's tacky.

I think chrome wheels can very much look cool if they're done right, and the factory rims on the Yukon and Escalade look pretty tasteful to me.

I also dont think the Yukon Denali is overpriced. Consider the fact that a loaded Toyota Sequoia will run you the same price, and even a BMW X3 is close in price. If I had plenty of money I'd pick the Yukon or Escalade in a heartbeat.

+1 1487! The QX and the Armada are really ugly! If I were on the market for a Nissan SUV I'd stick to the Pathfinder.

Sabastian, chrome is cool!

I think people that buy 'fully loaded' are full of it and fully insane, but I'm glad they buy all this add-on crap since my employer works closely with GM. Does anyone ever think that this Denali is just an 'optioned up $14k work truck'? (I know, it's got a third row seat!) Heck, you know they're makin' a profit on that $14k...And, do people just like to say to the Jones': 'look at all these options that I don't use or don't know how to use! But I got 'em!'

I'm sure I sound old and bitter, though I'm just 32. I can tell you that I don't need a $2000 dvd rear entertainment when I can just buy the kid(s) a $500 laptop to watch his dvds. Likewise on the Nav systems-$2k for GM's when a Garmin is around $400. And finally, I don't need the cruise control to brake for me for another $2k!

It's not like you're going to get all that money back on options when you sell it...but I guess that doesn't matter to the 'buyers' that lease the thing for over $800 a month.

True point. If you need to haul real stuff like large boats, cars, construction equipment etc you need a frame base SUV or truck. A friend of mine owns a 07 Denali with all the optinos you ask for. Front seats looks cool, power okay, rear seats?. Unconfortable rear seats. I ask him, you can buy a Chevy Suburban with the same crappy seats in the back for less! He smiled to me and said "I know". Don't get me wrong looks better than Infinity and the bling bling looks sharp but not for me.

I don't see the point getting into huge agreements as to why people should not buy large suv's because of gas milege. As long as your not paying for gas, and paying for their expense, there shouldn't be that much concern.

Thankfully a voice of reason.

I agree totally. But Ive ran into more SUV drivers that say "I like my SUV but it should get better gas milage". Common sense should tell anyone that these beasts arent fuel efficient so why complain?

Well then that's pretty stupid right there, hondacura4. You gotta pay to play.

I have to get it out of me: Who the heck can possibly like the front grille of this emasculated SUV?

I am at shock at how many people like the design. It's SMILING for Christ's sake, and it's supposed to be the king of the jungle SUV!

At least the Tahoe looks menacing, big just like it should. This one looks like that smiling 7ft huge kid. Menacing shape, too kind to hurt anyone.
It just astounds me the designers were paid for this crap. A GMC should NOT have baby SUV looks, period.

Phew.... [/vent over]

I think the price is quite reasonable, actually. The Yukon Denali is one of my favorites because it has all the power and luxury of an Escalade, but with a much more subdued style, and is a lot less expensive. Sure an Acadia would work fine for most folks, but a comparably equipped GL550, Q7, or X5 will be far more expensive. Even the big powerful luxury sedans (S-class, 7-series, A8) don't do all that much better on gas, and they can cost nearly six figures. Nobody criticizes S-class drivers for having more *luxury* than they "need". We all just wish we could afford one. So why do moderately priced SUV drivers get berated for having more *utility* than they "need"? In the grand scheme, gas is still a minor expense to the target buyer of a vehicle in this price range. If you prefer something else with better handling, whether it be a crossover or a fancy sedan, that's fine, but to each his own. There are a lot of ways to spend so much money, and this is probably the best and most capable SUV you can get for less than $60K.

I'm never going to buy one...so the price seems just fine to me. The wheels look fine to me. As long as one doesn't hit me trying to back out of a parking spot, or be a lane hog in front of me, or flash their high beams at me because they think they're more important than me....I'm happy with the Yukon.

How much does this thing weigh? I'm amazed it passes as a "sport" utility vehicle. Maybe stick some spinners on it.

Honestly, if you need a tow vehicle buy one. But this thing is embarrassing.

Despite gas prices and falling SUV sales, 07 and 08 GM SUVs are everywhere in Middle Tennesse. I suppose it has something to do with Williamson County being the 7th wealthiest county in the US, but I'm amazed at the number of brand-new Tahoes, Avalanches, Yukons (Mostly Denalis), and Escalades (all 3 versions) I see around here. And they're almost always being driven by women, alone or with kids. Hardly any of them are towing anything.
