At 18,563 miles it's time for a fuel economy update on our long-term G35 Sport...
So here's the data:

That best tank isn't bad. Was that pure highway?
Overall, discouraging but put into the context of where you live and how you guys drive it....not bad :)
Joe
P.s. That's only 5-6mpg less on average than my really aggressively driven, 2800 pound, fwd 2.0 liter :)
Pretty close to what I averaged in my '03 G35 Coupe 6MT: 21 MPG.
wow that's awful.
Nah, that's not awful, pretty much what a typical high output 6-banger will give you these days. My IS350 returns about the same numbers. However, my best tank ever was 28.5 mpg and that was for all highway driving.
A 335i, CTS 3.6L DI and C350 will give you about the same FE.
I drove a G35 journey with auto transmission yesterday as I search for a new car. Currently own a 2006 330i sedan.
After driving the G35, it pretty much sold me on the 335i. I was totally underwhelmed, the BMW is superior in every category, except interior room, compared to the G35. The engine had very little low end torque. and 2,600 RMP at 60MPH in top gear, horrible.
Comparatively, that's pretty good. V6s in the bread'n'butter category get similar yet slightly better mileage. Considering this is a full-on lux sport sedan, I'm actually a little surprised.
Wanting cake and eating it too, huh?
When I calculate my miliage and it is sub 16mpg, I smile. It tells me that I am driving close to redline often, and thus enjoying the car.
Within 0.5 mpg of my Mustang, on each of the three data points. My extremes are a little higher, but the average is pretty much exactly the same. Cool.
apinault - I hope that for your extra 8 to 10 grand, the least BMW can do for you is give some more low-end torque! Me? I'll go and invest in my kids' college fund with my extra cash.
Love that picture!
I don't think this is very good milage. The A4 Quattro gets 23 mpg overall compared to the G's 19 without AWD.
Let's view this in a broader context:
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=123235/pageId=132171#ets (yes I realize that I'm comparing autos to manuals but bear with me)
Yes, the G's overall mileage isn't great, but compared to the competition, it ain't all bad either.
And for what it's worth-Nissan/JATCO has developed their own 7A for medium/large vehicles; most likely the new 7A will replace the 5A currently used in vehicles based on Nissans/Infinitis FM platform (this includes the G, M, FX and EX).
I can get 23 - 24 on the hwy with my 4.0 6spd 4WD Frontier. Worst tank average - low 16s, best tank average about 20.
+1 on the cool photo comment.
It's funny that there's all this hype over the Pontiac G8 and its greatness.. why not compare it with the G35S? The G35S has a 3.5L V6 that is down by some 50HP and over 100lb-ft of torque and yet is still just as quick as the G8, looks better, has equal braking and handling traits and a better interior.
What makes the G8 better? Seems to me that the Infiniti is clearly superior in engineering.
... The G8 is bigger than the M45.
You make as much sense as anyone daring to think their car is better than the Yaris.
"What makes the G8 better? Seems to me that the Infiniti is clearly superior in engineering"
That's the great mystery of coolness. The G35 might be better on paper than the G8 but the G8 is cool and G35 isn't.
Weird but true.
The G8 is in no way cooler than the G35. It is making so much noise because it is one of the best domestic cars with big V8, RWD and decent handling (although it is really a rebadged Holden) in the recent years.
It's funny that if a car in G8's caliber is a domestic, it is the next greatest thing. However, if it's an import, it is expected. That really shows how low the expectation people have for Detroit these days...
Sad but true.
sddoc07-- Thanks for the reply. Yes, I know the BMW does cost more, but it is not like the extra cost does not show up in areas in the vehicle. Just open and shut the doors on both vehicles and feel the difference in weight and hear the "thud" in the BMW versus a "tinny" sound in the G35. Not to mention a 6 speed auto versus a 5 speed in the G35. And, I know this is discounted for some reason, but the refinement and solid feel of the BMW makes it worth the extra cost. Do not get me wrong, I thought for the price the G35 was nice, I just left wanting more. So, the extra cost is justified in my mind after seeing real differences between the two.
As for the 335 - beware of ANYthing german with twin turbos. I hope you don't plan to keep the car after the powertrain warranty is up...
The current G35 is leagues ahead of the previous G in terms of refinement, but it still lags behind what the best Germans can produce. With that said, it depends on your priorities, as the G is a tremendous performance value.
tryan, good points. For the price the G35 is a pretty good deal. I can't see opting for it personally as I view the extra cash for a 335 as money well spent. Or consider spending less than 30k for a car that's almost as good but more to my tastes. The G35 is a great deal but it's still not quite there...
Former Sport Sedan Junkie here, perfectly content with my 43-mpg Honda Civic Hybrid.
Just so you know...
As much as I like the 335i, its too expensive for what it is, and there are MILLIONS of them all over the place. Seriously - they are so commonplace its easy to forget its a $40k+ car.
I think there will be a 2009 CTS-V in my future - whatever it costs.
335 vs G35. I think all would be different if the 335 didnt offer anything above what the G offers for more money but thats just not the case.
The 335 is a wonderful car and IS worth the exrta coinage in my eyes. The refinement and just that feeling of solidity makes the price justifiable. Not to mention that glorious torquey twin turbo 6. Some things are worth the price.
"It's funny that if a car in G8's caliber is a domestic, it is the next greatest thing. However, if it's an import, it is expected. That really shows how low the expectation people have for Detroit these days... "
Name an "import" that can match the G8 at that price. A 6.0 V8, rear drive and a huge interior, that's cool.
Oh and all cars are imports to me. There are no Canadian car companies so I have no national bias. There are just somethings the the US does better then other.
Affordable cars with additude. Cool.
G8, Charger and Mustang. That's cool.
If the G8 can do it at comparable fuel economy (and it might) while offering greater interior space, I might go along. Till then, the Infiniti gets my vote.
The G8 does appear to be a screaming deal. It's a huge car, though. Statistically, I don't think it could keep up with a G35 around a race track. Though I doubt that would matter to most folks. I've sure never seen a G35 at an SCCA event.
