2008 Smart Fortwo: Fears No Parking Space

Since this weekend had bee-oo-tiful weather, EVERYone was out and about. But fortunately, finding street parking was never an issue since I was driving our 2008 Smart Fortwo around. In fact, I had a lot of fun finding spots that no one else could possibly fit into and cramming the Smart in there. Then I'd stand back and admire my parking job...

Parking by Venice Beach on a gorgeous Saturday morning? A cinch. West Hollywood during the Pride parade? Piece o' cake. That's why I think it's a great around-the-city car. Bad parking jobs by inconsiderate schmucks and areas crowded by events are nonissues.

It's pretty freeing for someone like me, who frequents highly trafficked areas of the city, to not have to worry about where I can park for once. I didn't have to worry about getting to events early or about having to wear my comfortable shoes so I can endure the long walk back and forth from my car to the event. I just rolled in whenever I wanted to in my 5-inch heels. So nice.

All I had to drive last summer was a motorcycle, and the same thing, see a tiny spot, zip in and done.

Also nice when hunting for a spot in a crowded mall lots, see a place open up on either side, turn in, done. No worry about enough room to turn in, no backing up, etc.

5-inch heels? Ow! I'm assuming there's a platform on those, as well?

The smart always looks a little odd to me. I think it's because, if one were to say that other cars were "laying flat", the smart is "sitting up". Just proportionately, it looks silly, but in a fun way. I also don't understand how something so small, lightweight, and lightly-powered gets such relatively-mediocre fuel economy. An EPA rating of 33/41?

Don't get me wrong, I like the smart, and I can see the appeal of it to someone who lives in a city, I just can't imagine owning one outside of a big city. If I were someone just looking to improve my fuel economy, I'd still take a Prius over this, despite the much higher price, for the convenience of all that extra space.

so is it fixed yet?

I like the title of this blog. Kind of makes the Smart seem like the little superhero that could.

SMART CAR: THE MOVIE
"THE ONE WHO FEARS NO PARKING SPACE!"

Followed by the Smart zooming around town killing the evil parking spaces by parking in them. It's perfect!

I walked downtown today to get a deli sandwich for myself and my wife. Low and behold a Smart was parked right in front of the courthouse. I knew the car was small but these things are tiny!
Everyone passing by was looking at it. Quite the conversation piece. Its really cool.

Ummmmm

For some reason

Those pictures don't quite do the Smart justice when talking about squeezing into parking spaces

Might I recommend a 'park off'? Let's see how much better this does compared to the Fit, Mini, or a Volvo C30.
