2007 Chevrolet Silverado LT: Neck Snappin' Good Times

Ok, I know what I'm going to talk about isn't the news flash of the hour but it's been a while since I've been in the Silverado:

The tranny is down right awful. It ain't fixed, it's worse. I know for many of you this is the ump-teenth post you've read about this, but last I heard was this thing was fixed and it's been a while since I've driven it so it's news to me.

The "whump" shifts are so bad that it snaps your neck. After driving it around for a while I started tense up at the point of shifts to minimize the mini whiplash.

Not only is it uncomfortable, the sounds and jolts coming from those hard shifts are very unsettling. That kind of racket can't be good.

I'm officially swearing off the Chevy until it's fixed. Fixed for reals this time. I don't get into the cars that often, but even if I get handed the keys for this guy I'll pass. I love trucks so this is kinda sad.

Sorry, Silverado. I know in the past we've been pals and all, but you've got issues. It's time for an intervention.

FREAK! Get a life? . somebody's thong acting like the silverado's tranny,...making stuff up? first of all i already told you guys about the same truck with simular problem back in 2002, i drove the truck over unpaved driveway and the same thing happened , this time all it took was a little mud , this sissy truck is only good for grocery getting not real work, today i had to put it in 4 wheel drive and i was very scared the same thing will happen again, i have the phone number for the repair shop on the key chain tag if you want proof, they did fix the RPM dropping problem it had, when i picked it up last friday there was a very long belt of some sort on the drivers seat , folded its about 3ft long im not sure where it goes, trust me last week when i say the silverado going away on the flat bed i was smiling from ear to ear, i was so delighted i almost walked off the roof.

lazyhater, overall most cars are in a 1-2 issue per car range. even the best manufactures. quality across the board is good. last test had gm quality just below that of the japanse cars.

" People need to realize that ANY vehicle can have defects or can break regardless of manufacturer. "

That is 100% true.

The difference is, for a good manufacturer, only 1~2 cars out of 10 have issues. And for a bad manufacturer, 8~9 cars out of 10 have issues.

Hopefully for GM and Honda its not a widespread issue.

GM, when you've been perfecting america's truck for over 90 yrs, this is what we get? (pathetic)......last week wednesday i pulled in the driveway of the house i was working on about 6:45 am , the driveway has backfilled dirt with stone ontop , it rained the night before so we had about a foot and a half of mud, i pulled past the garage and then proceed to reverse infront of one of the garage opening, i put the truck in 4 wheel drive and step on the gas and the puny engine just whine and groan, after a couple tries the stairing wheel just got tough and could not turn, the brake pedal also got tough and there was a jab jab in the pedal, my job called a flat bed and i was told to try and bring it to the top of the hill so they can get to it , after a few tries i manage to drive it to the top of the hill , i steped on the brakes to stop and the pedal just went to the floor, i had to stump on the emergency brakes to stop, i almost jump out of that thing, i have no idea what the stairing system has to do with the brake system, but they were both out, the flat bed took it to( wastler auto service)in westminster MD, i got it back that friday fixed, all invoices was sent to our main office, so i have no idea what was wrong other than its a POS, no surprise here that this truck is also a POS.... 2002 SILVERADO...74K miles.though it was a joy to see the silverado going away on a flat bed i was mad as hell, and for two days i had to put all our tools in a (C )container on the job site, that means loading them in a sky trak box at the house , take it to the C container , unload them in the C container and repeat the process the next morning, so please spare me the BS about how great these trucks are.

And then when you have an update on the honda fits transmission, be sure to hid it in an old blog post, instead of a new topic.

1487, why did you change your username to mr215? Need to reset the 'ol rep?

HEY...how about 10 posts on the FIT'S transmission problems! Jeez I'd rather have rough shifting than not being able to reverse...Oh, I forgot, it's a Honda.

Yep, defective transmission for sure. The 4L60 and 4L80 GM automatics in these trucks normally shift very smoothly, and they are extremely durable. GM builds some of the most reliable and smoothest shifting transmissions in the industry. If you don't believe me, ask any transmission repair shop or fleet manager.

I have 170k on the original 4L80E transmission in my '99 Suburban diesel, and it shifts and performs like new - never had a problem with it.

Although GM generally builds good automatics, defects do happen, and its unfortunate, but Edmunds got stuck with a defective transmission in their Silverado. Take it back to the dealer and demand a replacement transmission. If they say its normal, request a test drive with the tech in a new one, and show him the difference in shift quality. He can't say its "normal" then.

"How 'bout just a 5 spd even....shame on GM for not having the full package ready."

folks, the number of gears has nothing to do with the problem. It should be working correctly even if it has 4 speeds. Many journalists have complained about the shift quality in the new FWD 6 speeds in certain situations so just haviing more gears is not the solution.

get the truck fixed. While we understand your frustration with the dealer service we shouldnt have to reading these complaints because you guys cant get the dealer to handle the issue. Take it to a different dealer if LA has more than one Chevy dealer.

And whats with all the people looking for 1487 and others to defend the silverado? The truck needs to be fixed, period. And last time I checked it hasnt been towed like the Fit so I dont see why all the usual suspects are so excited about this problem. Louiswei must be overcome with joy that a domestic vehicle in the fleet has an issue. The Tahoe has the same tranny and as far as I know hasnt had the same issues.

altimadude00, it's like feeding a son. Would I skimp out on food for my son? No, because I am a good father.

70 miles a day, 15 mpg, that's about 4.6 gallons. My son needs to eat $15 of food a day. Is that too much to ask? $15 of food a day? Would you not give your son $15 to eat?

That's like, one Arby's combo and a few snacks. There are many larger sons out there who need more than $15 of food a day.

My son can bench 2000 lb and run at 80 mph. Oh I am such a proud father.

If they can't get a 4 speed auto to work right, what makes you think they can get a 6 speed auto to work right?

stovt001

I agree about the 6 speed autos. I have seen some heavy duty versions of the Silverado with the 6 speeds at the local Chevy dealer. The 6 speeds should have been in much earlier across the board.

Toyota must be congratulated for making everyone improve. While I am not fond of the look of the new Tundra(looks freaking huge), drivetrain wise it appears to be the real deal.

We also need the 4.5 diesel here asap.

billt9-- Were you one of the Ford employees paid to be at the Detroit Motor Show?

Just don't start to whine when you go to fuel that blinged out bruiser when gas hits $4 a gal.
