2007 Toyota Camry: Come Sit in the Backseat

2007 Toyota Camry LE V6 backseat - E. Riches

Our long-term 2007 Toyota Camry's backseat hasn't gotten much attention on the blog to date, but just as in past Camrys, it's comfortable and functional for everyday family use. Sitting in the back of our LE V6 long-termer feels almost exactly like sitting in this 2002 four-cylinder LE model we tested several years back -- the bench feels a little too low (for a long-legged adult like myself), but there's plenty of legroom behind the front chairs.

During the '07 redesign, Camry gained exactly 1/2-inch of rear legroom...

2007 Toyota Camry V6: The Case for Cloth.

Read through the most recent blogs regarding the leather seats on our long-term Audi Q7 and Hyundai Azera: They're filthy (the seats, not the blogs). It seems that a team of  belt and jeans wearing car writers will have that effect on a light colored interior rather quickly.

Not so with our Camry. 20,000 miles into the test and the cloth bares not a scuff nor spot of dye transfer...

Toyota Camry: Our very own scratching post

I noticed when I checked our archives this morning that we've commented on this issue before, but I saw it myself for the first time last night, so it's new to me: The area surrounding the ignition on the Camry's steering column looks like it's been mauled by a gang of bored kittens.

Guess we need to have our editors declawed. Not really sure what goes into making a steering column scratch-proof. Looks like Toyota hasn't quite figured it out either...

2007 Toyota Camry LE: Beyond Appliance

I spent a week in our 2007 Toyota Camry LE and drove a patriotic total of 1776 miles. If you spend that much time and those many miles behind the wheel you feel you should know the car through and through. So I feel I should have a summary comment about this car and it's value to the Great American Consumer.

An earlier blog post sparked a lively discussion of whether the Camry is simply an appliance...

2007 Toyota Camry: Long Distance Runner

I drove our 2007 Toyota Camry for 430 miles and it didn't even break a sweat. My family and I drove from Long Beach to Davis, California, to look at colleges for my son. When you're going through the Central Valley on Interstate 5 most of the traffic is doing over 80 mph. We weren't really in a hurry to get there so I set cruise control at 75 and just chilled...

Is the 2007 Toyota Camry Invisible?

I know a dark gray 2007 Toyota Camry isn't the type of car that stands out in a neighborhood where orange Lambos and red Ferraris are parked in front of the local gym but, come on, that doesn't mean it's completely invisible. I was crossing the intersection at about 10 mph during rush hour, almost on the other side of the traffic light, when this black Jeep Cherokee who had been waiting on my right to turn into my lane decided he didn't want to wait any longer and barreled through. He would have hit me if I hadn't done some evasive maneuvers, i.e. turn the wheel and stop...

2007 Toyota Camry LE V6: Scheduled Service

Last week the ever-helpful "MAINT REQD" (Maintenance Required) idiot-nee-warning light popped up in our long-term Camry. The car was not, as the screaming-yellow beacon intimated, on the verge of catastrophe; we were simply a thousand (2,541) miles or so past the 15,000mi recommended service. Phew.

The service included inspections of the brakes, tires, belts, hoses, lines, bolts and the battery...

2007 Toyota Camry: Why I'd Pick the Camry Over the '84 Ferrari

OK, the title alone is enough for this post to get dismissed by hard-core car guys and exotic-car fans, as well as alienate me from the car guys on staff. But oh well. I rode in the Ferrari (I'm not on the short list of people on staff who are allowed to drive it) and drove our 2007 Camry this weekend.

2007 Toyota Camry: Dad Gets (Some) Style

My Dad back in Virginia has never been, well, very style-oriented.  The wallpaper at his office now is the same as it was during the Nixon administration.  So when he bought the new 2007 Toyota Camry, I dismissed it as another chance for him to buy the most vanilla car around.

In some ways, I was right.  The Camry does not provide much excitement to the driver and there is nothing particularly bold about it, but having spent an evening in our long-term Camry left me pleasantly surprised in the style department.  I noticed on the Auto Show floor that this new generation looked much better, but upon driving it, it really came through that, though not necessarily exciting, the interior actually is a little creative and stylish.

Though not to everyone's taste, I really liked the illumination of the center stack. It is fairly futuristic and cool, and fits in nicely with the otherwise tasteful interior.  Again, we're talking relative to expectation here, but still, I want to thank the folks at Toyota for giving my father a little dash of style.

Toyota Camry: Handy pop-up trunk lid

2007 Toyota Camry LE V6 trunk lid - Erin Riches

As you might guess from the Camry's ample size hind quarters, it has a large trunk area -- notwithstanding its unimpressive 14.5-cubic-foot trunk capacity spec. But in the midst of cleaning my apartment over the weekend, I happened upon another useful attribute: The lid pops halfway open when you push the button on the remote or yank the lever in the driver footwell -- handy when your hands are full of junk. I realize this is not an earth-shattering feature on a mid-priced midsize sedan. Plenty of competitors offer the feature or have offered in the past...

Feeling Camry

2007 Toyota Camry LE V6 center stack - Erin Riches

Last night I was feeling uncharacteristically Camry: I wanted something big, comfortable and quick to drive, so I asked for our LE V6 long-term car. This was a change of heart. I've been slow to warm to the new-gen Camry. In addition to my complaints about its build and materials quality, I was prejudiced against its size...

Camry Fuel Economy: Depends on the Driver

It had been a long time since we checked the lifetime average fuel economy for our 2007 Toyota Camry. I hauled out the battered notebook in the door panel and spent a half hour crunching the numbers. The final result was a tepid 25.09 average over the 16,167 miles we've driven it.

There was, however, an interesting pattern in the numbers...

2007 Toyota Camry: Flipping on the black light

2007 Toyota Camry -- Brent RomansI was driving my sister-in-law around in our 2007 Toyota Camry recently. After about 20 minutes, she remarked out of the blue, "Jeez, there are really a lot of Camrys on the road, aren't there?"

I remember having the same experience as my sister-in-law the first time I took the keys to our long-termer. Toyota Camrys of every generation were no longer automatically filtered out by my brain. They seemed to be everywhere and in places I never thought possible...

Toyota Camry: Don't iPod and Drive?

2007 Toyota Camry -- Brent Romans

Having an auxiliary jack in a car, such as our long-term 2007 Toyota Camry, and an MP3 player is fab. It's all the songs you like, all the time. (Erm, until you get tired of them, that is.)

But I have to admit that, after fiddling with my iPod while driving on a couple of occasions, I've thought to myself: "This is pretty distracting from a driving standpoint." According a NHTSA study published last year about driver distraction, "...nearly 80 percent of crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes involved some form of driver inattention within three seconds before the event."

Is an iPod any worse than a cellphone, an in-dash radio, a backseat full of feuding children or the consumption a Taco Bell bean burrito? In some ways, I think it is...

2007 Toyota Camry: "Welcome To Camry"

2007 Toyota Camry -- Brent Romans

"Welcome To Camry." This statement scrolls across the head unit's display as you start up the car. For me, it should read "Welcome Back To Camry" as it's been six months, 9,020 miles and a few Mr. Pund-penned anagrams since I last drove our long-termer.

Not much has changed...

2007 Toyota Camry Brings Hope to the West Coast

One thing Barry failed to mention about driving our long-term Toyota Camry from Detroit to LA was that he was transporting a large piece of furniture in the backseat during the whole trip.

It seems while visiting my family in Michigan, someone (let's call her Grandma) thought Barry's cross-country drive was a good opportunity to move the hope chest my shop teacher-father made for me when I graduated from high school in 1987.

The chest measures 36" x 21" x 23".

We live in a small beach apartment.

There was a reason it was left in Grandma's basement...

2007 Toyota Camry: Comes Clean in Long Beach, Calif.

Considering the varied conditions encountered while driving the Toyota Camry a final total of 2,292 miles from Detroit to Long Beach, I was anticipating minor front end paint chips or scrapes. But after an extensive cleaning, inside and out, the Camry's none the worse for wear.

Kudos to the Toyota paint shop for protecting the magnetic gray metallic coating.

2007 Toyota Camry - Colorful Colorado to Crowded California

Locals warned that I should take dirt from the three surrounding mountain ranges before leaving Fruita, Colorado. Otherwise it's destined I will return. While I didn't heed their suggestion, the thought of returning to this serene Grand Junction neighbor is not entirely awful.

However, if taking road grime, salt, snow and rocks with me, then the Toyota Camry's got me covered...

2007 Toyota Camry – York, Nebraska to LA on the Stagecoach Route

Day two in York, Nebraska came early, especially after staying up all hours to watch the conclusion of the NBA Warriors bashing of the Mavericks. The Camry was dripping wet from the thick ground-hugging fog that deadened the sound of nearby 18-wheelers.

I started up the Toyota, looked at the temperature readout (61 degrees) and pulled out of the parking lot listening intently for dashboard squeaks and rattles. The silence that ensued as I picked up speed was delightful...

2007 Toyota Camry: Detroit to LA in Three Days (Maybe Four)

After four months of testing in Motown, the long-term Toyota Camry is returning to Southern California.

Tuesday night I took the red-eye from LA to Detroit to claim the car from Detroit editor Dan Pund. After a day spent visiting family and friends, I was ready to roll.

2007 Toyota Camry: Farewell, My (not entirely) Lovely

2007 Toyota Camry: Where do you want your AUX?

With all due respect to my colleague who earlier complained about the placement of the Camry AUX input, I say phooey! That's right, phooey.

Of all the dunderheaded locations a carmaker could place an input for an iPod; Toyota's solution is perhaps the least dunderheaded. True, it is tucked all the way to the back of a deep, dark cave at the bottom of the center stack...

2007 Toyota Camry: Maybe the kids aren't alright.

With the long-term Camry freshly back from the body shop, a curious tradition has returned that has called into question my earlier comments about the originality of the car's design and the eyesight of the kids in my neighborhood.

I noticed it first a month or so ago. As I was getting ready to go to work, a gaggle of neighborhood kids was gathered around the long-term Camry which was parked in the street. There was about five of the pre-teens wearing stuffed backpacks and they were leaning on the car--my car!..

2007 Toyota Camry: Now with fewer wrinkles!

I just picked up the long-term 2007 Camry from the body shop attached to Paige Toyota in Southfield, Michigan and the car feels soft and comfy like an old leather glove. And now, after $1236.67 and six days at the shop, it has fewer wrinkles. The Camry has a new driver's side mirror housing, left front fender and a bunch of new metallic gray paint. And actually the car was ready in about three-and-a-half days, but we were unable to pick it up before last weekend...

2007 Toyota Camry: Now it can be told

Our sincerest apologies go out to all the faithful readers of the long-term 2007 Toyota Camry blog. You might have noticed that this river of interesting and sometimes useless bits of information has gone quite completely dry in the last month or so. With the ugly specter of lawyers getting involved, we had to go radio-silent...

2007 Toyota Camry: (Subliminal) Secret to Success

The reasons for the Toyota Camry's sales success are legion. You could write a whole book about it--a thick book that no one would read.

There is the model's legendary reliability, dependability and other positive words that end in "bility."  There is also, we note, a directly proportional relationship between the popularity of gray cars and the rise of the Camry epoch. But, thanks to some hard-nosed investigative reporting and several free minutes in the office this afternoon, we've discovered another reason for the model's unnerving control over the American populace...

2007 Toyota Camry: Economy

Recently I checked out the EPA's web site for new-car fuel-economy estimates (fueleconomy.gov) for a story unrelated to the long-term Camry. I stumbled across the Toyota's official estimates--22 City/31 Highway, for the V6 model. Those are pretty impressive numbers for a car as punchy as the 268-hp Camry. Indeed, they're the best among the Camry's toughest V6-equipped midsize competitors...

The Ghost of Camry Past

It didn't take long for our Camry to make friends after moving to Detroit. Here the 2007 Camry gets cozy with a 1995 Camry LE that's assigned to the next parking spot. Looking at the two gray Camry LEs, it doesn't appear that much has changed in the last dozen or so years. And Toyota buyers should hope that proves true, at least in terms of reliability...

2007 Toyota Camry

The three clean spots on the trunklid of the Camry are from three of the fingers of my right hand. The patina of salt and dirt that was once on the trunklid is now on my fingertips. You see, the Camry has no interior mounted handle, hook, pull, recess nor anything else that might allow me to close the trunklid without soiling myself. Perhaps it seems like a small thing, but I don't like to get my hands dirty. Or at least I don't for something so uninteresting as shutting the trunklid of a car. Just keep the car clean, you say?..

2007 Toyota Camry, on ice

Never have I been so thankful for slack steering than on the drive from the Camry’s new home in Detroit to the Chicago Auto Show. Toyota Camry: Dim Watt

I meantioned in a blog entry during my cross-country drive that the headlamps on our long-term Camry are not powerful enough. Then I thought, perhaps I hadn't been fair with what is otherwise an excellent and surprisingly powerful automobile. Perhaps, I'd just become unusually crabby after my iPod battery gave up while I still had five hours of driving ahead of me (and no recharger on board). Possibly my brain, numb and underworked after all those miles was napping and not properly dealing with the data streaming across the ol' optical nerves...

2007 Toyota Camry: End of the Road

Final Day: Rolla, Mo to Detroit, MI

Total Santa Monica-to-Detroit Trip miles: 2445

Welcome home, baby. The long-term Toyota Camry got a right and proper introduction to its new home of Detroit when we were caught in a near-white-out blizzard just after crossing the Michigan state line. It was the first poor weather we'd encountered on the whole three-day trip from the Santa Monica home office and the Camry handled it well. The Camry's traction-control system is a hyperactive, cutting engine power when I tried to pull away from stops...

2007 Toyota Camry: Where the Sun Don't Shine

2007 Toyota Camry: Scratching Beneath the Surface

There have been various comments regarding our long term Toyota Camry's interior quality...and I'm going to add another one. When I got into the vehicle this morning I peered over the steering-wheel spoke to confirm ignition key insertion. What I saw staring back at me was a large scratch in the steering column plastic. Closer inspection revealed several more scratches -- apparently I'm one of the few drivers who looks before I leap into key insertion. But even careless key placement shouldn't be causing this level of visual wear on a four-month-old Camry. Further evidence against assuming a Toyota badge automatically means impeccable interior material quality...

2007 Toyota Camry: So Polite!

Like most voice-activated systems, our long-term Toyota Camry "talks" to you as it guides you through the process of making phone calls and setting up Bluetooth. And, thankfully, these talking car voices have come a long way in terms of sounding human (versus the monotone, HAL 9000 speech they used to employ). The Camry even goes out of its way to be polite, asking you questions and saying (and displaying) "Pardon?" when it doesn't understand what you said. A stark constrast to the average motorist you encounter during a morning commute in L.A...

Toyota Camry - view from the cabin

2007 Toyota Camry - A-pillar

I can't see the traffic light. This is not just a problem with the Camry but with most modern cars: The airbag stuffed into the A-pillar cuts driver visibility out of the front left of the car. I can't see the stop light on the left side of the street without looking around the pillar. And when trying to make a left turn, guess what?..

The Disarming Details

Let's talk about ergonomics.

I've been driving the Pontiac Solstice a lot lately and my left elbow is black and blue. The driver's side arm rest is hard plastic and, if you try to use your left arm to hit the window switch you drive your elbow into hard plastic. Now cut to me in the Camry: "Hey, the arm rest is not only covered in soft material, but there's room to move your arm to press the windows button!" I was so excited I took this action photo of me, performing the maneuver...

2007 Toyota Camry LE V6: What's going on with Toyota interior materials quality?

2007 Toyota Camry LE V6 climate controls - Erin Riches

I got into the Camry to drive to lunch this afternoon, and my gut reaction was mild distaste: When I turned the manual climate control dial in our LE V6 tester, it felt cheap, flimsy and dissatisfying. I would expect this in a Toyota Yaris or Scion tC, but I've never had this feeling in a Camry. I also got annoyed by the non-leather-wrapped steering wheel. Instead of the smooth, silken feel of the non-leather-wrapped wheel in our departed long-term '03 Honda Accord EX, this one feels like plastic and pretty rough plastic at that...

Toyota Camry: faux metal scratches

The thing about plastic that's made to look like metal is that eventually the seedy plastic underbelly comes through. Such is the case with the Toyota Camry's steering wheel. The matte silver "metal" is begining to scratch. With just 7,000 miles on the odometer, this is a little disappointing...

Toyota Camry: Highway Fuel Economy

2007 Toyota Camry -- Brent RomansThe EPA estimate for highway fuel economy on a 2007 Toyota Camry V6 is 31 mpg. Given the 268-horsepower output of the engine and the car's size, it's an impressive figure. But as with just about every long-term car we test, the Camry's EPA estimate is a little unrealistic given modern driving habits. On tanks that we drive primarily highway miles, it seems our Camry gets about 25 to 27 mpg...

Toyota Camry: Likes and Dislikes

I2007 Toyota Camry -- Brent Romans've been driving our long-term 2007 Toyota Camry for almost two weeks now. Overall, I have to say that I really like this sedan. The qualities that the Camry has earned a reputation for -- comfort, safety and, of a more debatable nature, reliability -- seem to be intact. And as unexpected bonuses, there's serious thrust from the V6 engine (enough to beat back Civic Sis and GTIs at stoplights) and styling that doesn't immediately say, "Excitement: Eliminated For Your Protection."

Toyota Camry: Fast Warm Up

2007 Toyota Camry -- Brent RomansSince having our 2007 Toyota Camry LE V6 in my possession, I've noticed that the coolant temperature gauge indicates a fairly rapid rise to normal operating temperature after startup. For Camry V6 owners living in cold climates, this fast coolant warm up could be useful for getting heat into the cabin more quickly.

This morning I went out and clocked the speed of warm up. (Unfortunately, the outside temperature was already 50 degrees F, so warm up would obviously be longer for someone living in, say, Buffalo, New York.) I let the car idle in my driveway for 2 minutes and then, growing bored, shoved off and puttered around my neighborhood, never going more than 20 mph or so. After an additional 1.5 minutes of driving (so about 3 minutes and 30 seconds total), the coolant gauge had partially risen and warmer air was blowing out of the vents...

Toyota Camry: Sound of Silence

2007 Toyota Camry -- Brent RomansI've been driving our long-term 2007 Toyota Camry LE around for the past few days and have been impressed by how quiet it is on the highway. This is particularly true in regards to its lack of road and tire noise. The Camry, in contrast, remains relatively quiet even when driven on this surface...

2007 Toyota Camry: Build Quality Isn't All It Could Be

2007 Toyota Camry interior detail - Erin Riches

Talking about the fit and finish on a Camry is usually a formality: Call it "class-leading" and you're pretty much done. Or so I thought. After a night in our LE V6 long-termer last week, I came away a bit surprised and disappointed. Indeed, the car feels solid and likely to maintain its structural integrity through the next decade or two or three. But the number of misaligned interior panels in this car rivals our long-term Pontiac Solstice.

2007 Toyota Camry: On the Road to Heavenly

When I first saw the TV commercials for the 2007 Toyota Camry, I was surprised by how sexy it was. A new 268-horsepower V6? Sexy, more sinister lines than the previous model? (Its headlamps almost look Mazda-ish.) I wanted a piece of that! So I jumped at the chance to take it for a looong drive to Lake Tahoe for a wedding to break Baby in for its first road trip ever. Sitting in the driver seat for nine hours is such a grueling prospect but just looking at the spacious interior eased my worries a bit.
