Long-Term Road Tests

I was thinking the other day (always a dangerous proposition, I know) and wondering how all the current (or really, really recently departed) Edmunds/Inside Line long-term vehicles stack up against each other in fuel economy, at least the fuel economy we've been recording during their time with us. So I made a list. For you and for me. In case we were both wondering.
The only current vehicles missing from my list are the Audi R8 and the Dodge Grand Caravan, and that's because no one has entered any fuel data into the tracking spreadsheet for those vehicles yet. The very top and the very bottom of the list aren't going to surprise anybody (I don't think), but the middle is kinda interesting. Seeing the Rondo and the WRX so close to each other made me raise my eyebrows. Ditto the Ford GT's spot above the Veracruz. Ready to check it all out? Follow the jump with me.

I left the office late last night heading down Wilshire when I noticed a whistling sound. The last time I drove the Silverado the transmission blew up on me. I was worried. After listening intently I noticed the back window was slightly ajar. I didn't even know this thing had a back window!

Relieved, I pulled over to close it. It was then I noticed it wasn't mechanical, but powered. Where was the switch? I searched and searched but I couldn't find it. RTFM? Yes, I reverted to the manual.

If you can remember, the transmission in our Silverado grenaded about a week ago. And while I'm sure I'm not the first person to drive it since its return, I still wondered if it was a good idea to take it home.
Twenty minutes later I coasted to a stop. In front of my house. Anti-climactic, I know but it seems the work done by Santa Monica Chevrolet did the trick and the Silverado can now return to schelpping us and our half-caf double mocha organic soy lattes around Southern California.

Last week's Silverado cliffhanger left off with our trusty Chevy being towed to Santa Monica Chevrolet after the transmission decided to take an early Fourth of July vacation. GM Roadside Assistance handled the tow as the truck is still under warranty. It was efficient and quick, I was pleased.
Today's thrilling conclusion begins later that same day:
I called Santa Monica Chevy a few hours after the tow truck left to see if they had a chance to look at the truck. Our service advisor had said earlier that they may get to it that day, but most likely it would be Tuesday morning. I took the chance and called anyways. To my surprise they had looked at it and he was frank with his diagnosis:
"We've had a rash of these lately. The input housing busting as the mileage gets up there. It should be ready by Wednesday."
I left them alone and waited for a call on Wednesday. It came around 2:00PM and said that the truck was ready. The forward clutch sprag was replaced -- they did not, as some commenters had assumed, replaced the transmission with a refurbished unit -- and the transmission was, again, reconditioned. Two days to tear into a transmission and have it back in our hands? Not bad. But if they have, in fact, had "a rash" of these, it may have saved a lot of time in diagnosis and parts availability. There is also a TSB out on this issue, NHTSA ITEM NUMBER - 10021018.
The good news: Drive works and the transmission is again able to use all gears.
The bad news: The transmission doesn't shift any smoother than it did before the sprag failure.
Days out of service: 3
Cost to us: $0.00

On the eve of Independence Day, I thought I'd peruse our garage for the most American metal. Amongst the many long-termers presently in the long-term fleet, we have quite the selection of cars built by domestic makers. Some are excellent representives of this great land, others ... not so much. And that's not counting the pretty cool American cars that reside in our editors' own garages: Trans Ams, Challengers, Corvettes and Schmidt's big ol' F-150.
Of course, what constitutes an American car these days is up for debate given the Focus is hecho en Mexico and our Hyundai Veracruz is hecho en Alabama. But I'll leave those determinations up to you. And the nominees for our Most American Car are...
Buick Enclave
Cadillac CTS
Chevy Silverado
Dodge Caravan (oh dear god, I hope not)
Ford Edge
Ford Focus
Ford GT
Pontiac G8 GT
Saturn Aura

We have talked about the transmission in our Silverado before and the less than smooth shift from first to second. I can't tell you that it has gotten any better or any worse but there does seem to be a new noise related to the transmission. Now when shifting into drive from neutral there is a pause and then a clunk as the gear engages. I don't remember the shift from neutral to drive sounding so violent in the previous times I have driven our Silverado. I'm not sure if this is just a sign of aging or if something will need to be done about it, but I am sure we will keep you updated

Trucks are better than cars. How do I know? Our Silverado has more than 30,000 miles on the clock while many of our long term cars struggle to reach 20k in a year. True, we've had the Chevy a little longer than a year but there's a reason the Nissan Versa struggled to its 16,000 miles in one year and the Hyundai Azera to its 18,500 and the Toyota RAV4 its 19,400 - they weren't as useful and people didn't like driving them that much...

While driving the Silverado into the office this morning, I noticed some wear and tear on the steering wheel's silverish plastic trim. The black plastic beneath the silverish paint is showing through on the left side (in closer detail below) from obvious wear caused by drivers' left hands. There's also a spec chipped off on the right. Our big Chevy now has 30,737 miles on it, so if this is typical, it could be important to note given this same steering wheel appears in most of GM's trucks and SUVs. Over more miles, this could start to look bad and be detrimental when it comes time to sell. It's certainly not consistent with the rest of the interior's wear and tear.
Our Enclave has the same wheel design, although it has a different type of painted plastic trim in that area (lower-level Acadias seem to share the Silverado's). Given that there's a good chance the Enclave will also hit 30K (we do love it so), I'll make note if it shows similar wear.

The 10-year-old boy in me lived a life-long dream this past weekend when I attended a taping of "American Gladiators." Now, Hulk Hogan is no Larry Czonka and there was a disappointing lack of teal and pink No Fear wife beaters decorating the crowd, but heck, it was sure fun. They were only doing one event (which still took 2 hours to film four contestants), but it was Hang Tough and we got to yell out such classic heckling as "Oh yeah, scissor her! Yeah scissor!" Plus, I got a high-five from Wolf. Not Tower, Turbo or Laser, but certainly the awesomest new Gladiator...

Our long term Silverado just returned from service at S&J Chevrolet in Cerritos, Ca. Oil and filter change plus tire rotation rang up a bill of $67.96.

Before and after the dealership visit, I drove the Silverado extensively and really love the center storage area - In past week, I've stuffed tons of junk in it. Contents this trip - wallet, hard sunglasses case, two DVD cases, two Quaker granola bars, bottled water, Garmin nav system, two packets of seeds, three Sharpie pens and a notepad...

My husband's Xtracycle needed some professional help this weekend, so I grabbed the keys to our long-term Chevrolet Silverado, and we made a trip to the bike shop.
I was so happy to have a reason to need a full-size truck and was all ready to write a post about the trip (it was an uneventful success), but then, as I was walking along the outside of the truck, the light of the setting sun hit the fuel filler door just right, and I noticed the unsightly chipped paint you see in the photos. The chips, near as I can tell, are due to normal fuel fill-ups. And so I post this question to you: Are our editors extremely uncoordinated, or is it unreasonable to expect a factory paint job to maintain its integrity in Southern California for 25,000 miles?
I also noticed that we haven’t given you an update on the truck’s fuel economy since June 2007...

My friends and I took our Silverado to Mammoth this past weekend for three days of skiing and snowboarding in fresh powder. The problem with fresh snow is that it doesn't just fall on the trails, so needless to say the roads weren't in the best condition. Even with a total of 36 inches of snow fall while we were there the Silverado remained as sure footed as ever. We never once had to stand outside in the cold and wrestle with chains or dig our way out of a ditch, all we had to do was put it in 4wd and go.
However, after driving through the pass into Mammoth in 4wd there was the faint smell of burning coming from the Silverado. The next three days were spent driving around town in 4wd and then through the same pass on the return trip in 4wd. The smell was never duplicated and the Silverado ran without any problems for the rest of the trip.

In no one's estimation is the 2007 Chevy Silverado LT small. It is a very large truck: 19 feet long, more than 6 high and 6.5 wide. But it doesn't really feel that way. I even drove the Honda Fit subcompact the preceding few days, and the Silverado felt quite comfortable afterwards...

Our Chevrolet Silverado en route to the Race Track in Death Valley.
Chevy guys can begin fist pumping now -- our 2007 Chevrolet Silverado LT tamed the 54 miles of pounding Death Valley Road that turned our 2007 Honda Ridgeline into a bouncing idiot.
I spend a lot of time praising Hondas so this blog post is about giving equal time to the competition.
Three years ago I decided to explore the famed Race Track in Death Valley in our Ridgeline. Made it in and out of there but the next day the Honda was all over the road. Took it to the dealer and they said all four struts were blown out. Apparently, the type of shocks Honda used didn't dissipate the heat effectively and it melted the seals. Honda replaced all struts and wheels under warranty (read more).

This weekend I actually used our Silverado as a truck, not just a car with a big open trunk on the back. I needed a new bathtub and now I have one. BTW, here's a free household tip, don't use bathtub resurfacing services. You'll just end up buying a new one anyway but then you're out the $175 you paid to make the old one look pretty. It's going to look real pretty in the landfill now...

I've noticed over the last few days of driving the Silverado, the transmission has a peculiar habit. At the point where you'd think there would be a shift between first and second, the gear holds unusually long in first and then with a good "whump" it hard shifts into second.
It's a little disconcerting to say the least. We have an appointment on the horizon to see if there is anything wrong...

I've driven the Silverado home a few nights this week. My commute home is pretty short so I don't have a lot of new impressions to offer. But after recently driving our Tundra for a long road trip, I have definitely gotten a new opinion on trucks.
To me, trucks are purpose built vehicles. They're for work, sometimes play, and have emphasis on durability, practicality and versatility. Trucks aren't supposed to have airs of luxury and fashion in my opinion.
The Silverado has a plain but very functional interior. A lot of plastic abounds but it gets the job done. To me, that's very truck-like: purpose built and practical.

This morning I climbed into our Chevy Silverado, adjusted the rearview mirror, and began my commute to work. A few minutes later a very calm voice said "OnStar emergency how may I help you?" The OnStar emergency call button on the Silverado is located on the bottom-right of the rearview mirror; unfortunately this is also where my thumb lands when I adjust the mirror. I don't know where the emergency call button is on other GM vehicles but if it is on the rear view mirror I wonder how many accidental calls they get as a result.

(Hoosier Cabinet in bed of long term Chevy Silverado)
I had a chance to put the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado through its paces this weekend with a 800-mile trip while hauling two loads of cargo.
My son was returning to college and needed a load of furniture dropped off at his new apartment in Santa Barbara. We loaded the truck with a bed, mattress, bicycle, boxes of books and clothes (no, no beer kegs). About halfway there, we stopped for coffee and came back outside to find we had been overrun by a freak September rain storm...

(Cell phone picture of our Silverado on the rack.)
I had a bad experience at a Mitsubishi service department recently so when I took our 2007 Chevrolet Silverado in for an oil change and tire rotation I thought it would make an interesting comparison test. I took it to Harbor Chevrolet in Long Beach, California, near my house.
Test #1: Did I have to wait long in the service line?
Within a few minutes the service advisor greeted me cheerfully and said, "I'll help you out in just a minute." It's amazing how a few words of recognition can make you relax. As promised the service advisor invited me into his stand-up office a few minutes later to "get me all taken care of."
Test #2: Was I pressured to approve high-cost repairs I didn't need?
I visted the Maintenance Costs section of our site before I headed to the dealership and saw that our estimate for a tire rotation, oil and filter change, and a host of inspections, was $156. When I told my service advisor what I wanted he said, "A lot of those inspections are on our fifteen thousand mile checkup special for only $372." I couldn't help it but I laughed...

I love trucks, so a long weekend in a truck is a little slice of heaven for me. A slice of heaven if I was out on the road and not stuck in West Los Angeles that is. Living on the West Side without a parking spot can be a little tricky when trying to shoe horn in such a long truck into a small spot.
I know this isn't exactly a new statement for me, but when I drove around on Saturday for nearly 50 minutes looking for a place to park near near my apartment I just about lost it...

I put a lot of miles on our long-term Chevy Silverado this weekend, from a long highway drive to a gig on Friday night to a trip up the coast to the beach on Saturday. And despite its enormity, the Silverado is really very easy to get along with. The brakes yank it down, it handles freeway undulations and road imperfections better than expected, and it's easy to park.
Bear in mind that the theory of relativity is at play here...

It was moving day in the Riswick Apartment-hold this weekend. We were only moving up a few floors in my building, but I commandeered the long-term Silverado to donate our old sleeper sofa.
A few years ago, I remember reading that my home state of Indiana was the only one that allowed you to mount a couch in your truck's bed and sit in it whilst moving. I have no idea if it's true or not (couldn't find anything on the Internet), and my respect for California's laws prevented me from really trying it out, but my fellow Hoosier roommate decided to climb aboard to somewhat recreate such a scene while parked. Readers with a keen eye will notice such Hoosier inconsistencies as an import beer and a lack of mullet.
Sadly, our couch fun ended there, as I soon discovered that some days you just can't get rid of a couch.

I recently took the Silverado on a road trip into the Santa Cruz Mountains to take my 13 year old son to a Scout leadership camp. The Silverado seemed impossibly large - way too big for my taste. Once on the highway heading from Santa Monica to the Central Coast of California, I was pleasantly surprised. The truck was fun to drive on the highway, and when we arrived in the mountains, my wife, always distrustful of narrow, windy mountain roads, soon shared my enthusiasm. The truck handled equally well on steep twist backs and eroded dirt roads.

Last night I drove our Silverado home only to find that it did not fit in the parking spot outside of my apartment. Unfortunately I didn't find this out until I walked out of my apartment at about 10:30 pm and found a parking enforcement officer writing me a ticket. The overhang from the bed of the Silverado was overlapping the sidewalk, a finable offense.
I guess it's only small cars from now on.

A post from last month mentioned that our 2007 Chevrolet Silverado's transmission was acting up. I've noticed the same issue. It seems to happen only when the vehicle is cold. Moving underway in first gear at normal speed (like when you're pulling away from your house in the morning, for instance), the transmission holds first gear longer than it should and then abruptly and roughly shifts into second...

To give it brief respite from Southern California gridlock, I've taken our long-term 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 250 miles northwest of LA to my current place of residence: Fresno, Calif. Fresno lies in the center of California's agricultural heartland. And here, Silverado keys in hand, I feel like I'm living out Chevy's "This Is Our Country, This Is Our Truck" TV and Internet ad campaign. Despite a recent housing boom, the Central Valley is still the real deal -- farms, cows and lots of pickup trucks...

Dear readers: Those of you who follow my incoherent, semi-literate, long-winded blog posts know that I am a fan of four-door sport sedans. Fortunately, the nature of my work has allowed me to expand my horizons to a variety of cars, from the amazing Miata to the incomprehensible R500, the sweet RAV4 to the unlovable Pontiac Solstice. I have used the Chevy Silverado on a few occasions, once to move a large table, and despite all my best intentions, I really like it.
Primarily, this has to do with its handling...

One Man's Junk is another Man's Treasure

Here's my treasure. This weekend I showed it the light of day, having been liberated from a too-costly storage unit we've been using. After our recent move from house with ample storage to one with less storage, we've been forced to slowly and effectively decide what gets pitched and what needs to stay. The Silverado continues to be the vehicle of choice for the weekly slog between the new homestead and storage unit.

This past Memorial Day weekend, our Silverado logged over 900 miles on a trip up to the Mammoth Lakes region, and the surrounding areas. Planned stops included the Hot Creek Fish Hatchery, Crowley Hot Spring, and the Mule Days Celebration in Bishop, CA. Loaded with three coolers, luggage for six people, three adult passengers and myself, the Chevy was the workhorse (sorry, mule) of our two-car caravan.
On the 14 and 395, I knew it would handle the grades easily, but we (especially our rear passengers) loved how much the ride was softened by the payload. Also, with the 6.0-liter V8 we had plenty of power for passing motorhomes and toy trailers...

With only one truck in the fleet, the Silverado was my default ride when it came time to go pick up my latest two-wheeled distraction over the weekend. As much as I like the Silverado, however, its short 5.5-foot bed once again left me wishing for more. Not much more, but enough to close the tailgate would have been nice. With the bike loaded up the rear tire extended roughly eight inches past the end of the bed. I drove it home with the tailgate down and four very tight ratchet straps holding the bike. I wasn't all that worried, but an extra foot of bed length would have made it that much easier. I see a bed extender in our future.
On an unrelated note, I broke Dan's mileage record on the trip with a final count of 374.6 miles on one tank. When it came time to fill up, the 26 gallon tank took 24.6 gallons for an average of 15.2 mpg. With a light foot our Silverado could easily do 400 miles.

I ran our 2007 Chevrolet Silverado's tank down about as far as I would ever care to. A bit farther than my wife's threshhold, it turns out. She exclaimed loudly and more than once that, "I won't be helping you push." Oh ye of little faith. I've been frustrated by gas gauges that cried wolf many, many times before, so I wasn't worried. Besides, I have AAA.
I wrung about 353 miles from the beast in mixed driving - the most on one tank so far, according to our logbook. It took 24.3 gallons to fill 'er up, so I had plenty to spare - at least a gallon and a half.
The Silverado stayed empty in more than one way this weekend. I had an eight foot load to haul and this truck has the 5.5-foot short bed. Plus, it was raining felines and canines. I had no choice but to use something else.

As is customary when you have access to a truck, a friend asked for some help moving this weekend. I negotiated the usual free dinner and round of golf to be determined later and headed out with the Silverado. He said there were a couple dressers and a bed set along with a few bags of clothes and a sizable painting. No problem I assured him, although I didn't really know whether or not the short five-and-a-half-foot bed would handle the mattress set...

For the past two nights I've been living with our long-term Silverado and once again came away impressed with this big truck -- and I'm not a truck person, in spirit or necessity. I live as close to downtown Los Angeles as possible without needing riot gear on standby. I envision filling the bed up with ice and beer far before a wheel barrow, garden equipment or whatever dirty farm implements I don't know the names of. I'm even sick to death of that John Mellancamp song from the Chevy ad...

Looking at our Silverado in the sunlight the other day I saw a small run in the paint. That was all it took to remind me of the repairs made to the bed earlier this month. An untrained eye would never see the minor paint flaw and slight dimples from the re-worked metal. It's a truck so who really cares about a couple of imperfections?
What Silverado owners will care about is the cost of that 4x4 decal...

During our ongoing kitchen remodel project, I'm always looking for quiet places to do a bit of work. A couple of days ago that place turned out to be the cabin of our 2007 Chevrolet Silverado long-termer parked in front of my house.
My wireless router's reach extends to the curb (don't bother, it's encrypted) so with Treo in hand I was truly in business. To my surprise, my laptop fit perfectly on the center console. I wasn't driving, and frankly wouldn't recommend it, but for those who use their Chevy truck as an office while parked at the job-site, this is a very welcome set-up.

I feel like it's been forever since I've driven a huge vehicle and I forget how much I like being so much higher, and bigger, than everyone else. Sitting in rush-hour traffic isn't so bad when you can see the horizon and over the tops of fellow motorists. HA ha! I have to say, though, that I still prefer our old long-termer, the Nissan Titan, over the Silverado...

Last night I once again had the opportunity to drive our long-term Chevy Silverado. I really don't know what's come over me, but I really dig this truck. You couldn't get me in the Tahoe, its SUV stablemate, because it feels as if I'm driving a building. But despite its enormous size (driving down the street I realize that I'm looking down on many full-size SUVs save the freakishly huge Excursion), it really does drive extremely well...

At 4:30 last Saturday morning our long-term Chevy Silverado was loaded with three mountain bikes, four people and enough riding gear and supplies to collectively cover 165 miles and more than 33,000 vertical feet -- by bike. It played support vehicle to our local two-wheeled torture festival by comfortably moving my wife between aid stations and the finish line and then hauling home three wrecked riders.
My wife, a former full-size truck owner herself, reports that the Silverado, although longer than her 1997 Dodge Ram, is no more difficult to position in parking situations and has manageable steering response. Apparently she got some wheelspin maneuvering out of a gravel parking spot, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't the sort that requires another visit to Burkes Auto Body (http://66.160.188.111/roadtests/641)...

As soon as the Silverado left the body shop, it was driven straight to S&J Chevrolet for service.
With over 10,000 miles on the odometer, it was overdue and the 0% oil life indicator had been lit for weeks.
This is the second truck we've had serviced at S&J Chevrolet in Cerritos, California and we've been pleased with them overall. The waiting area could use a little sprucing up but otherwise everything went well...

The Silverado looked a little odd sitting next to freshly painted sedans and coupes. All the other cars looked so sparkling compared to the Silverado - It's been covered with a layer of brake dust, sand, mud, grit and dead leaves since we got it...

I never had this problem in our long-term Nissan Titan or in the Toyota Tundra that won our recent half-ton truck comparison test...

And so it was, I took control of the Silverado keys when it suited my needs. I admit it, I'm not really a truck guy. However, like everyone on the planet who isn't a truck person at heart I have no problem borrowing someone else's when it's time to move something big. In this case I was making a parts run and I knew neither the family Malibu, Challenger, Sonett nor the GT was going to get the job done. But the Silverado swallowed 12 boxes of parts (some of them quite large) without batting a tow/haul setting.

You probably can't tell by looking at the picture (and no, I don't drive like this) but I had a hard time adjusting the Silverado's seat to a comfortable driving position. Which was amazing to me considering the power-adjustability of said seat. The brake and gas pedals aren't on the same level so when I wanted to get close enough to the gas pedal I ended up too close to the brake. And consequently, when I readjusted the seat so that I wasn't on top of the brake, I was too far from the gas pedal...

Recently I was tasked with moving a rather odd Christmas gift from my parents' house to my brother's house: a 3-person air hockey table. (See photo.) Since I'm fortunate enough to work for a company with a fleet of useful vehicles of all shapes and sizes, I lassoed the Chevy Silverado from our test garage and headed out. I am primarily a sedan/sports car driver, having owned a series of Alfa Romeos and BMWs through my life, and definitely not the pickup type. But I had heard good things and figured this was a good opportunity to have some real-world pickup experience. I found the handling confident and secure, the sight lines were solid, even the turning radius was pretty good. The crew cab configuration allowed me to carry my brother and his sons with ease, although the boys kept badgering me with "Can we ride in the bed?" When I replied, "Do you want your uncle to lose his job and/or go to jail?" my very earnest nephew replied, "What do I care?..

It didn't take long for the first blemish on our Silverado. The odometer hasn't even reached the 5,000 mile mark.

Our high school science teacher wasn't blowing smoke after all - - two objects CANNOT occupy the same space at the same time. Thanks to a firmly anchored stop sign and a lapse of judgement by the driver, there's now a metal-deep gouge along the side of the bed...

I began (and completed) a long-overdue garage cleaning this weekend and enlisted one of the most recent additions to our long term fleet, the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado LT. As much as I despise pickup trucks as daily drivers (bouncy ride, impossible to park, thirsty V8, etc.), there are occasions when only a pickup will do. Moving a garage full of random items to a cross-town public storage facility is one of those. Here's a quick snap shot of what worked and what did not.

When the current Ford F-150 debuted back in 2004, it was a good looking truck that drove well, but it had several design issues that annoyed me to no end. One of them was the design of the floor on crew cab models. Lift up the seats and instead of an unobstructed load floor you got a big jack mounted on the passenger side. Chevrolet managed to get it right with this Silverado...

I've driven many large trucks in my time at Edmunds but I think this is the first time I've scaled a truck that doesn't have a grab handle on the driver-side A-pillar. With a ground clearance of 9.1 inches, the Silverado isn't the tallest truck I've been in, true, but being 5'5" I still need some help getting into the cabin. I wonder why the passenger side gets that grab handle but the driver side doesn't. Hm...

My weekend with the Chevy Silverado is a story of man and machine and the kind of emotional connection between the two that can only happen this time of year. It's Christmas time after all, and the Silverado was without complaint as it hauled the family over to the Home Depot for one of those precut and incredibly cheap Christmas trees. We picked out a nice 7 footer, which fit in the Chevy's bed perfectly. I even got to close the tailgate for the two mile ride home...

It's easily one of the most comfortable trucks I've ever driven and the fact that it rides as good as it does with the heavy-duty suspension is remarkable. That said, I've started to pick up on some of the truck's minor annoyances.

I've never driven a pickup with rear parking sensors before, but after taking my first drive in our long-term 2007 Chevrolet Silverado LT last night, I don't want to live without them. They took a lot of the guesswork out of finessing the truck in the narrow driveway behind my apartment -- and eliminated the need to get out of the truck and judge the lines. I was also impressed by the Silverado's maneuverability in tight spaces -- it felt smaller than our long-term Titan (even though it's actually 5 inches longer and 1 inch wider). Finally, I love the power-folding mirrors...

It was in the fleet all of 24 hours before our Silverado got pulled into its first bout of moving duty. A friend of mine was setting up shop in a new house and I figured the truck would come in handy for some of the smaller stuff. With its short 5 foot 3 inch bed, our Silverado can't really swallow a couch very well, but it did accommodate a kitchen table with room to spare. Folding the rear seats opens up a good amount of floor space too, so it was useful for small stuff as well.
Of course, there's a reason why the crew cab only comes with a short bed. Anything longer would make the truck too big to fit in the average garage. To test the theory I pulled the Silverado into the empty garage of the new house to see how it would fit. Sure enough it was tight. With the nose barely an inch or two from the wall, the Silverado's back end barely cleared the garage door. So yeah, it fits, but not by much.
