VW Atacama concept

Volkswagen will be showing a 4x4 concept called the Atacama, which is the name of a desert in South America, at the IAA Fair in Hannover Germany. It's based on their new Crafter van, which competes with the Mercedes Sprinter van, which we see here badged as either a Dodge or Freightliner; so we're talking about Euro full-size van here.

It's powered by a 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo diesel putting out 164 hp, has a 6-speed tranny, and is wearing 285/55 R 20 off-road tires. There is no word yet on production plans...

Wonder what that hump is in the roof. Seeing the ladder isn't encouraging; trying to horse canoes and kayaks up that high is work. But the ground clearance and internal capacity would be nice.

All in all, I think I'd rather tool around in the Microbus concept that VW killed a couple of years ago.

Looks right up the alley of Pinzgauer/Unimog folks, but for that it'd have to have 12 forward and 6 reverse gears and portal hubs.

I bet you could fit the canoes inside as tall as the roof is.

My dad has a sprinter and the interior height is like 7 feet!

Brings new meaning to the phrase "C-pillar".

it looks like a Dodge Sprinter

Looks really neat, and has an interesting name. The Atacama is a desert in Chile, which is the driest place on earth.

I'd totally get one if I had the money and if it made it to production.
