GM announces all-new 4.5L Duramax V8 diesel

This is exciting news folks—and arguably some of the most important engine news to come out of GM in years. GM will introduce an all-new 4.5L V8 diesel for the 2010 model year for their light-duty full-size trucks and for the Hummer H2.

Here are some key points:

• This is a 100% in-house GM design, and not engineered by Isuzu.

• The turbocharged engine is a DOHC unit with 4-valves per cylinder... • It's expected to be rated in excess of 310 hp and 520 pound-feet of torque.

• It will meet the stringent 2010 emissions standards, and it will be compliant in all 50 states, making it one of the cleanest diesel vehicles ever produced.

• This engine should be able to fit in the engine bays of any GM product currently using small-block V8s—which could mean some very interesting further vehicle/model applications.

Wow, this is huge. A DOHC 4vpc diesel with better performance than the regular Chevy offerings. Toyota must offer an adequate diesel now. Imagine if this were to get displacement on demand.

Well, Toyota has just such an engine too—and it's in production right now, but sold in Australia.

Again, 4.5L V8, DOHC with 4-valves. I bet this goes in the Tundra.

More here on the Toyota 4.5 diesel.

The Toyota 4.5L V8 turbo diesel is
202 hp @ 3400 rpm
317 lb-ft @ 1200 rpm
20 mpg combined on a 4828 lb SUV.
Unimpressive last-gen engineering.

The Toyota diesel is all-new. It's only been on sale a few months, so I'm sure the tecnology is up to date. I suspect it's tuned to meet the (more agricultural) needs of the Aussie commercial-grade Land Cruiser 70. I think there's a lot of untapped potential there. Certainly if it comes Stateside for Tundra duty it will be tuned much higher than that.

One thing about commercial-grade diesels is that they are often offered in wide ranges of tuning. For example this 7.2L Detroit Diesel (see link) is offered in horsepower ranging from 190 – 350.

Is the 190 hp version inferior to the 350 hp version? Of course not. It's just designed for a different application. I'm sure that's the case with the 4.5L Toyota diesel. There's a lot more potential than just 202 hp there.

I think this is very promising. I can't believe noone sells one now, actually.

I think everyone misses the point of a diesel engine, torque! Give me torque and I can pull things. Give me horsepower and I can drive fast but why drive fast in a blocky bulky truck?? For that I would own another sportscar!
