2008 Chicago Auto Show: BMW M3 ALMS Racer

For all those of you who complained that the BMW M3 has become too soft in its current form, have a look-see at this, the coolest car on the Chicago auto show floor: the M3 ALMS racecar.

The Rahal/Letterman team will campaign the car in American Le Mans Series racing in 2009. BMW reckons the V8 makes about 485 horsepower. The car weighs 2,535 pounds and carries 15-inch front and 13.1-inch rear brakes... That would be one butt-load of go and stop for the weight.

The company has not announced who will drive it. We recommend us. BMW, call us (said with pinkie in front of our mouths and thumb in ear). -- Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit

I'm guessing the former PTG drivers such as Joey Hand, Bill Auberlen, and friends will probably see some time behind the wheel of the ALMS E92 M3.

I look forward to seeing (and hearing) this baby on track.

I love the power. I love the weight more. Automakers could learn a lot of these ALMS and GP series.

Very cool. The interior looks like a Nintendo nerd's dream.

Please BMW, I'm begging you, get this car into the hands of the Rolex series for next season. With only one GTO left in the GT class and no more M3s to root for, who am I supposed to get excited about in a field of same-old 911s? ALMS needs to share the wealth.

Lovely car.

Love those fenders.
