2008 Geneva Auto Show Preview: VW Scirocco

In the latest edition of broken news embargos, there are now images up on the Net of the production VW Scirocco. The car will debut at the Geneva auto show next week.
Probably most surprising, at least to me, is the front, as it looks very little like the concept that had been making the auto show rounds. And, as is often the case, I prefer the concept, at least from the front...

I'm ok with both designs. The concept does look a little too Audi-like for VW, though.
Where'd the grille go? I'm not crazy about the slat-style thing they fitted to the production car.
And is it just me or does this car seem almost identical to the GTI? I thought it would be more coupe and less hatch, but as it stands now, I don't really see the point.
It still looks very nice, but i think it lost a large part of it's audi/vw charm with the new nose.
I think the point of the 'Rocco is to give Veedub an excuse to sell a more expensive GTI. IIRC, rumored starting price is above $30K.
Keep it up VW... we won't see you in this country in the next decade.
I bet they will add the concept grille to the "S" version.
It is looking very Audi A3-ish and maybe nipping there for stealing sales. If it really is just a chop top GTI, it's going to be a tough sell.
So they have the GTI, the A3, the TT and now this. Wow, that seems like quiet a lot of cars with very similar performance and price points (OK, so the TT is a little more). Sad to say, if they brought it here, I'd probably go with this.
Very nice. this car reminds me of an alfa brera, sort of.
Maybe this is harbinger of things to come in grille design -- I for one am tired of those big hulking "angry" grilles, whether they're on small cars or full-size pickups.
I think the production model looks great. They did a better job in the transition to production than the Lancer 5 door, and by far.
