Jeep's mystery CJ4

No, that's not a typo in the title. There was indeed a Jeep CJ4.
CJ3 and CJ5 Jeeps we've all heard about, but what happened to the CJ4, as Jeep just skipped over that model for production, and went straight from the CJ3 to the CJ5? In fact both the CJ3 and CJ5 co-existed for several years, sitting side-by-side on showroom floors, as the production of both models overlapped for some time during the '50s...
I've often (well, not
really often, but certainly on occasion) wondered what happened to the missing number "4?" Why it was skipped over and never made? Now we have some info on it. As it turns out there was a CJ4. It was a prototype, and was built in 1951. Only one example is known to exist.
Unfortunately we still don't know why it was never produced. You can read about it
here at
Hemmings. The actual story links are
here and
here. Interesting stuff.

Must not have been ready in time for production, so they just skipped over it.
Intersting find, though.
