Comparison Test: 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid vs. 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI

Comparison Test: 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid vs. 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI

We tested two of the most fuel-efficient full-size SUVs side by side, the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid and Mercedes GL320 Diesel.

Well, relatively fuel-efficient anyway.

Which do you prefer?

MPG is impressive considering the weight but I wouldn't buy either one.

Both are far too much money for what they are.

I don't agree with throwing that much engineering at them to try and get better mileage when the same thing could be accomplished by shaving off 1000 to 2000 lbs and knocking $20K to $30K off the price.

Lewis Hamilton would probably prefer the Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI. After all, he has a Mercedes-Benz GL420 Bluetec complete with 24-inch wheels. =Þ

*agrees with Wagon*

Is Erin Riches suppose to be a Penny Miser or a Green Environmentalist Hippie?

The video depicts Erin as a Penny Miser.
She wants to save gas money for HER OWN BENEFIT.
She wants to DESTROY the environment.

Remember the Merc 320 CDI cannot be sold in California and New York? Because it pollutes like mad.

(Air Pollution Score of 1/10, worst possible.)

The Hybrid is the much cleaner emissions vehicle, good for the environment.

The CDI may get better mileage, but dumps out a lot of junk out its exhaust. And thus it is banned from California and New York.

MPG != Environmentally friendly.

Environmentalist = What comes out the back.
Penny Miser = How much goes in the tank.

GL320CDI is my choice because i believe in diesel. Also the upcoming GL320bluetec makes it clean too!

"(Air Pollution Score of 1/10, worst possible.) "

If you read into it a little more you will find this line....

"This score does not include emissions of greenhouse gases "

The EPA is picking and choosing what it considers pollution.

Btw, I never knew the Stig was a hippy. ;-)

firstwagon,
...clarify your point.
CO2 traps warmth in the atmosphere, but it's clear and it's breathable with no effect on your health. CO2 may warm the environment and cause climate change.

Nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons are damaging to your health and environment. They're carcinogenic, cause smog, and respiratory illnesses.

You should separate them into separate categories. Things don't come in simple "yes pollution" and "no pollution". What do you mean by pollution?

What I think of pollution, is things that make me cough, wheeze, and smell bad, give me cancer, and make me have to go see the doctor.

So during the fuel economy test, the Tahoe got 20.9 mpg and the Benz got 23.9 mpg.

Let's do some math, shall we? ;)

A quick search on gasbuddy.com reveals gas prices in my zip code as low as $3.45. The best diesel price, even if we overlook the handicap of having to drive farther due to less availability, is $4.29.

So, even giving the diesel that handicap, it still loses in terms of fuel cost.

To drive 10000 miles, the Tahoe driver would pay $1651.

To drive the same distance, the Benz owner would have to fork out $1795.

Hybrid wins by $144 for each 10k miles driven.

The hybrid is also $14 grand cheaper and pollutes less.

Here we are in April, demand for heating oil has died down, yet diesel still costs a fortune.

Juice,

There's something jenky going on with diesel prices. There's no reason for diesel to be pricier than regular gas, so the gas companies are up to something.

In 2009 we'll see BMW, Honda, VW, MB and Subaru (maybe 2010) release 50-state legal diesel cars. Why would the gas companies keep bumping diesel prices? Hmmm....

The VW, Honda and Scooby engines are extremely economical - all are over 40 MPG combined. Who would benefit from trying to stifle that kind of purchase? Hmmm...

Funny thing, in California, diesel is less than 8% more than premium, so the actual cost gap is negligible compared to the extreme gas savings.

I checked the price of diesel this morning (In Vancouver, BC) and it was $126.5 /litre. Gasoline was $127.9/ litre. (litre roughly equals one quart)

Not the normal 10 cent/litre cheaper but still less then gas.

Your right blueguydotcom, some is wrong with your diesel prices. You're being hosed.

I think your decimal is misplaced. You're paying $128/L, or $512/gallon?

Whoops. Move the decimal over two places or remove the $ sign and make it cents.

Good catch
