Porsche takes top spot in J.D. Powers 2008 IQS

Good news for car, SUV and truck buyers, as the quality of vehicles built for consumers continues to improve. J. D. Power and Associate's has just just-released their 2008 Initial Quality Study, which measures quality in the first 90 days of ownership... This initial quality is a good predictor of long-term durability. The new study showed substantial initial quality gains made by three-quarters of the 36 ranked nameplates.

Individual winners were:

• Porsche took first place among all 36 nameplates in initial quality for the third consecutive year.

• Honda captured three segment awards - more than any other nameplate -- for the Civic, CR-V and Fit.

• Chevrolet (Malibu and Silverado LD), Infiniti (EX- and M-Series), Lexus  (LS and RX) and Mercedes-Benz (CLK- and E-Class) took two segment awards each.

• Other segment award winners were the Ford E-Series, Lincoln Navigator, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Pontiac Grand Prix sedan and Toyota Sequoia.

It seems like every survey I see has significantly different rankings.

I guess you just pick the one that best reflects what you'd like to believe.

"2008 Initial Quality Study, which measures quality in the first 90 days of ownership. This initial quality is a good predictor of long-term durability"

I serious doubt that. You really have to nit pick to find problems with new cars and problems they do find have little connection with what will go wrong in the future.

I would say that Porsches are driven much less than average, as some or maybe most of them are not daily drivers. So within 90 days, someone may have only driven their new P-car 500-1500 miles and would not discovered many issues.

In my meager opinion, I think initial quality studies are overrated.

Agreed. The importance of the first 90 days is very over-rated.

JDP's own Longevity study is much more significant, and the finishing order is a lot different.

Having said that, it's nice to see Kia improve so dramatically. And what happened to Acura? Weren't they on top a short while ago?

Agreed. Initial quality/reliability/satisfaction surveys are pointless. I can't imagine many people would admit they made a bad purchase within the first 90 days.

Kia has better quality than Mazda?

Kia has better quality the Subaru?

Why does Honda have better quality then Acura? They are the same thing.

No, Honda and Acura are not the same, the way Lexus/Toyota and Infiniti/Nissan are not. But I know what you mean! (similar mechanicals etc)
Weird thing is that with Lexus and Infiniti, they both perform better than their cheaper siblings, but it is reversed for Acura and Honda.
