Chevy Cruze announced

GM has released images and some info on the all-new Chevrolet Cruze. The car will officially debut in October at the Paris auto show.

The Cruze will be a world car, and as such, will be sold in Europe, North America and Asia. Here it will replace the Cobalt and will likely be badged as a 2011 model. The Cruze will be powered by 1.6 and 1.8L that produce 112hp and 140hp. Both engines feature variable valve timing on the inlet and exhaust sides which improve fuel economy as well as boost low-end performance. The turbodiesel is a 2.0L unit and develops 150hp. A five-speed manual will be standard and a new six-automatic will also be offered.

Hey it doesn't look half bad! I'd almost go so far as to say that it'll be the best looking compact on the market. It'd be nice to see GM bring some of the oil burners to the States as well.

Pretty good looking overall. I'm not to crazy about the taillights though. Mazda3 and Lancer are still #1 and #2 on my list of best looking compact sedans, but the Cruze could be #3. The looks is a very subjective matter though.

I wonder if those gas engines will be the same ones offered in the states?

I also wonder what this thing will weigh?

Hopefully they will produce a Cruze SS. Perhaps with a six speed manual?

crowb- weight is a crucial question b/c this thing is already shaping up to be the biggest in the segment. That's not necessarily a good thing.

Roar,

Yeah that's why I'm curious. When GM designs a small car and the first thing they brag about is how its bigger than everything else, it makes me wonder. Hopefully they will work in some weight reduction technology.

I just thought of the perfect song to go along with a TV commercial for this car "Cruise Your New Baby Fly Self" by Girls Against Boys. It would be a classic car commercial, lots of slow motion shots of the car tearing around corners and stuff.

I love that song...I hope the Ad people from GM read this and take my glorious advice. It could very well secure the successful launch of this car. :)

Weight is a very valid concern. GM has closed the quality, reliability, and design gaps with their competitors quite well. The one area where they are still regressing on is weight. The new Camaro is much smaller physically than the Challenger, and GM officials swore up and down that they "sent it to weight watchers" yet it still came out fat at nearly 4000 lbs. If this car is physically big for its class, I cringe to think what it might weigh. Common GM, everyone else can make a reasonably light car. Why can't you?

That said, it looks fantastic. If they make an SS model that matches or exceeds the current Cobalt SS, I'd consider it.

Why all the excitement about this stupid-looking Daewoo? Are people really this gullible?

wk

From what I've read this is a Chevy that will be rebadged as a Daewoo for other markets.... not the other way around.

I agree about the weight concern. This car really should weigh no more then 2600 lbs if it's going to get class leading mileage.

Is this the replacement for the Cobalt? If it is why do they keep changing the name?

2600lbs is a bit low as my old 1995 Civic Ex sedan weighs 2500lbs and some change and its not anywhere near as big as todays "small car" offerings.

Overall, goodlooking car and very interesting drivtrain offerings.
