2008 L.A. Auto Show: Scion Staffers Review the Nissan Cube

lookitsacube.jpgI put in a good 20 minutes ogling the 2009 Nissan Cube this afternoon. I wasn't alone. The Super Silver GT-R on the other side of the stage wasn't getting nearly as much attention.

Finally, some employees of Scion walked up and when I saw their badges, I couldn't resist asking them what they thought.

"I don't like it," said one. "We build cars that are more uniform-looking, more, um..."

"Symmetrical?" I offered. (We were looking at the Cube's rump.)

"Yeah."

So what do you think? Can we allow the 2009 Nissan Cube to defy symmetry?

"Can we allow the 2009 Nissan Cube to defy symmetry?"

Absolutely! Where is it engraved in stone that everything has to be symmetrical?

Ha! The current Scion xB's lone light on the rear bumper is real "symmetrical."

Scion, you F41L.

Toyota can take their center mounted gauges and *&%$%.

Cube has one of the best looking, functional and well designed interiors in recent memory. Cudos to Nissan!

Scion had some awesome looking cars until they redesigned them. Now, I guess they are jealous because the Cube isn't conforming to other ideas of what a car should look like, which used to be Scion. Yes, the Cube is unique, but not in a bad way, like the new Scions. What else would employees of Scion say?

I love the Cube and the fact it doesn't conform. This is what the new Scion XB could've been. Ever since the last redesign, Scions are mainstream and have toned down from the originals. I think the Scion people are jealous that Nissan is getting the attention that they once had. Like wk said, kudos to Nissan for being daring enough to bring this car to the States.

Sounds like a wee bit o' jealousy from the Scion guys! Their once funky non-mainstream designs now look about as exciting as a Camry next to the Cube (and the Kia Soul as well).

"Can we allow the 2009 Nissan Cube to defy symmetry?"

Definitely. I eagerly await the day that some of the cars on North American roads are half as wacky as in Europe. A car doesn't need a V8 to be interesting.......

I agree, they're jealous. The newer Scions have much less personality.

I remember reading some 6 years ago an article in Car and Driver which talked about cars that were exclusive to Japan, and the Cube was one of them. They praised it, saying it was one of the cars that would certainly work in the US and when interviewing the car's designer, it turned out he was a big fan of the design of refrigerators in the 50s and 60s. That explains a bit of the car's look I guess :P

And IMHO, it looks cool in all it's asymmetric glory.

Good for Nissan and trying quirky. The last xB was quirky. The new one is staid. Guess which one has lower sales?

I wish more cars took design chances. There's very little available anymore with character.

As an owner of a Scion xB Classic (not the new one), when it comes time I must replace my xB I will be looking at the Nissan Cube even though I would prefer to remain with Toyota.

Scion (Toyota) left a hole in their line-up when they "replaced" the original xB with a US version of the Camry Rumion station wagon. Yes, the current "xB" is a better freeway cruiser, but "longer, lower, wider, more power" took it out of the City Car market.

For those of us actually wanting an Urban Utility Vehicle (UUV), Scion established that niche here in the US with the original xB, then abandoned those hard-won buyers by not having any direct follow-on vehicle in the Scion or Toyota lines when they discontinued it.

Hopefully the Cube will be as well built as the xB.
